Company Overview

Altris AB

Uppsala, Sweden

2017

Approximately 50 employees (source: zoominfo.com). Revenue of $13.6 million (source: zoominfo.com).

What They Do

Altris AB focuses exclusively on sodium-ion battery technology, developing cathodes, electrolytes, and full cells using abundant, low-cost materials like sodium, iron, carbon, and nitrogen to avoid lithium, cobalt, nickel, and conflict minerals (source: altris.se). Their core product is Fennac®, an iron-based cathode material similar to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) in voltage and capacity but cheaper to produce, with higher power, better low/high-temperature performance, and no thermal runaway risk; it's produced via a low-energy process at scale (source: winway.se). They also offer patented NaBOB fire-retardant electrolyte and complete sodium-ion cells with energy density matching LFP, using compatible production lines (source: altris.se). Target markets include grid storage (commercial/residential), commercial transportation (buses, trucks, marine), and low-cost personal vehicles (two/three-wheelers); they license cells, electrolytes, and processes to customize for customers (source: altris.se). Altris differentiates through a fully European supply chain, cost stability from abundant materials, superior safety, and rapid commercialization, positioning it ahead of lithium-dependent rivals amid CATL's 2020 endorsement of sodium-ion; they've secured automotive/energy partnerships while scaling to gigawatt-hour output (source: uic.se).

Projects & Track Record

Altris has no large-scale completed projects publicly detailed as turnkey installations, focusing instead on material production ramp-up and cell prototyping; their Uppsala R&D line produces up to 100 MWh/year of cells, while Sandviken's Ferrum facility (launched 2023 via deal with AB Sandvik Materials Technology) hit 2,000 tonnes/year of Fennac by design, enabling 1-3 GWh batteries annually (source: altris.se). Ongoing projects include expanding Uppsala cell production to 15 MWh, establishing a pilot plant for sodium-ion cells with SEK 77 million from Swedish Energy Agency (Industrial Leap/NextGenerationEU programs), and scaling Fennac output to meet 2022 demands pre-Ferrum (source: youtube.com). Key clients and partners encompass Northvolt, Volvo Cars, Clarios (low-voltage batteries), Maersk Growth (maritime), and recent collaborators like Ligna, Jemac, RISE (ultrathin sodium-ion battery for electronics, Vinnova-funded) and Oscilion (Nordic sodium-ion module for military, with initial orders) (source: altris.se). Geographic presence centers on Sweden (Uppsala/Sandviken), with European partnerships and Asian outreach for mass-market adoption; expansion targets full-scale production within three years of earlier funding rounds (source: winway.se).

Recent Developments

In 2024, Altris raised SEK 150 million ($14.5 million) in Series B1 from Clarios, Maersk Growth, EIT InnoEnergy, and Molindo to expand production and European market presence (source: ess-news.com). Recent funding includes SEK 80.75 million from existing investors, following SEK 77 million Swedish Energy Agency grant for a pilot cell plant (source: altris.se). Earlier, €4.8 million (SEK 50 million) bridge financing in 2023 supported industrial manufacturing in Uppsala, with appointments of Björn Mårlid as CEO and Christer Bergquist as CFO (Bergquist later permanent CEO) (source: zoominfo.com). In 2025, Altris launched collaborations for ultrathin sodium-ion batteries (with Ligna/Jemac/RISE) and military modules (with Oscilion, initial orders secured); they earned third consecutive Ny Teknik 33-listan 'golden company' nod as Sweden's top innovative tech firm (source: altris.se). Prior rounds: €9.6 million (SEK 100 million) Series A for 2,000-tonne Fennac scale-up (enabling 1 GWh/year), €7.3 million from InnoEnergy, and €4.8 million bridge; total funding exceeds $29.8 million across four rounds (source: altris.se).

Working There

Altris seeks battery experts for roles in designing, producing, and licensing cells, electrolytes, and processes, spanning R&D, materials science, production engineering, and commercialization teams; open positions are listed on their site, emphasizing customized customer solutions (source: altris.se). Hiring occurs at Uppsala (R&D/cell production) and Sandviken (cathode factory) (source: altris.se). Company culture highlights a tight-knit community of passionate specialists driving planetary impact via sustainable energy, supported by early-stage programs like UIC Startup (2018), Build (2019), and Swedish Scaleups (2021-2023) for structure and funding (source: uic.se). No specific benefits like salaries or perks are publicly documented in sources, though employee participation in recent €4.8 million bridge funding indicates stock incentives (source: zoominfo.com).

Job Description

The Prototyping Technician role is based in the pilot line for battery cell manufacturing and is dedicated to prototype-scale production rather than mass production. The position encompasses supporting R&D activities, particularly Design of Experiments (DoE); integrating design changes into equipment and fixtures through re-tuning or modification; executing prototype builds; troubleshooting and repairing pilot equipment; and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and quality standards.

  • Operate pilot-scale line and equipment for battery cell prototyping, ensuring accurate execution of defined processes
  • Support prototype builds across different stages of the battery cell manufacturing process (e.g., electrode preparation, assembly, formation, testing)
  • Create, review and update line operation documentation handed over from engineering teams, ensuring smooth transfer into prototype operations.
  • Fabricate or provide 3D-printed parts when required to keep equipment operational.

What We're looking for

At Altris we value individuals who are keen to learn and develop their own skill set. If you're a problem solver who loves production and process development environment and making complex things work, then this is the place for you. Beyond that we imagine that you have some of the following points on your resum:

  • A university degree is not required; however, significant hands-on experience (e.g., 3+ years) in mechanical and/or electrical roles within an industrial manufacturing environment is essential.
  • Experience as a production or laboratory technician, ideally in prototyping, pilot lines, or R&D support.
  • Competence in CAD modelling (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or equivalent) for product and equipment-related tasks.
  • Competence in data collection, process documentation, and reporting.
  • Team-oriented mindset with flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Good problem-solving skills with the capability to troubleshoot equipment issues and implement effective modifications.
  • Experience with experimental trials, lab equipment, or pilot-scale operations.

What you will get

We can promise you that you will be challenged, develop your skills and have the opportunity to work with truly amazing and competent colleagues. If you like changes and want to set new processes and ways of working - this is the place for you!
