Battery Technology Jobs in Renewable Energy

Battery technology is the science and engineering of the cell itself: electrode and electrolyte chemistry, cell design and formats, testing, and the electrochemistry behind lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow, and solid-state batteries. Most jobs in the field sit where cells are developed or made, and the geography is lopsided. According to the IEA, Chinese producers supplied almost 75% of the batteries in electric cars deployed worldwide in 2025, while the EU and the United States each hold only 6 to 7% of global manufacturing capacity.

What the work involves

Cell engineers and electrochemists choose and tune materials: cathode chemistries such as LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and NMC (nickel manganese cobalt), anodes, electrolytes, and separators. Test engineers run cycling, calendar ageing, and abuse tests, and translate the results into warranties and safety cases. Process engineers turn a recipe into production, controlling electrode coating, drying, cell assembly, and formation, where small deviations decide yield and lifetime. Design engineers package cells into modules and packs, which is where the field meets Battery Management Systems and thermal design.

Chemistry choices move the job market. LFP accounted for over 55% of EV batteries deployed in 2025, the IEA reports, up from nearly 50% a year earlier, and LFP packs cost more than 40% less per kWh than NMC on average. Stationary storage relies mostly on LFP, so engineers who know its manufacturing and degradation behaviour are in demand in both markets. Sodium-ion, flow, zinc, and solid-state chemistries are still small, but each supports specialist teams.

Who hires

Cell makers and developers hire the core technical staff. Verkor runs its research and pilot line in Grenoble and its gigafactory at Bourbourg near Dunkirk, and is one of Europe's most active recruiters of battery engineers. Factorial Energy develops solid-state cells with carmakers as partners, Eos Energy Enterprises builds zinc-based batteries for grid storage near Pittsburgh, and Aachen, a centre of German battery research, hosts employers such as Voltfang, which builds storage systems from second-life car batteries. Moment Energy in Canada works on the same second-life model.

Storage developers and integrators such as Fluence, Zenobē, and Plus Power hire battery specialists to qualify cells, negotiate supplier warranties, and monitor degradation across their fleets, work that overlaps with Battery Energy Storage Systems. Listings under this tag also include installers and electricians for home solar and battery systems, especially in Germany, but those are installation roles rather than battery technology in the strict sense.

Where demand is heading

Stationary storage is adding a second, fast-growing buyer for cells. The EU installed 27.1 GWh of battery storage in 2025, 45% more than in 2024, according to SolarPower Europe, which puts the capacity needed by 2030 at around 750 GWh against roughly 77 GWh installed so far. Recycling is the other growth track: the EU Battery Regulation's recovery targets are creating roles in Battery Recycling & Second Life.

The profile employers struggle to find combines electrochemistry with manufacturing experience. People from Chemical & Process Engineering, semiconductors, or coatings adapt quickly to electrode production, and engineers who have scaled a cell line in Asia are recruited hard by European and American factories trying to close the gap.
