What They Do
Snowy Hydro's core technology focus is on pumped hydro-electricity, gas-fired peaking, diesel peaking, and contracted wind and solar renewables. The company operates 16 power stations and one pumping station, boasting a total generating capacity of over 5,500 MW dispatched to the National Electricity Market (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which is a significant part of their operations, features nine hydro-electric power stations and 16 dams linked by 145 km of tunnels and 80 km of aqueducts, primarily located in Kosciuszko National Park. Additionally, Snowy Hydro manages water storage and diversion under the Snowy Water Licence for irrigation to the Murray and Murrumbidgee systems (source: wikipedia.org).
Projects & Track Record
Snowy Hydro has a rich history of notable projects, including the original Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme, which was completed in 1974 and delivered a total output of 3,740 MW from seven power stations, such as Guthega, which began operations in 1955 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The company also operates significant gas assets, including the Colongra Power Station (667 MW, acquired in 2015), Laverton North (320 MW), and Latrobe Valley (300 MW) in Victoria, along with three diesel stations in South Australia totaling 136 MW (source: wikipedia.org). Currently, major projects include Snowy 2.0, which aims to link the Tantangara and Talbingo dams via a 27 km underground tunnel and establish a new pumped-hydro station for 2,000 MW generation and 175 hours of storage, with construction having commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au).
Recent Developments
In March 2018, the Australian Government acquired full ownership of Snowy Hydro by purchasing shares from New South Wales and Victoria, solidifying its status as a wholly-owned Commonwealth entity (source: snowyhydro.com.au). The construction of Snowy 2.0 is a significant advancement in the company's portfolio, marking it as a nation-building pumped-hydro project that commenced in 2019 (source: snowyhydro.com.au). Additionally, Snowy Hydro has secured contracts for over 1,000 MW from ten wind and solar projects, enhancing its renewable energy offerings (source: leadiq.com).

A 12 month fixed term contract position exists for a Project Manager to join the Project Delivery Team in the Civil program of works stream.
About the position
The Project Manager - Civil is responsible for the planning and delivery of a range of sustaining civil projects. These projects aim to meet the long-term safety, reliability, and availability requirements for the business. The application of sound project management principles, together with appropriate HSE and risk management, is paramount in all planning and execution aspects of the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a strong focus on risk, safety, and environment throughout the project lifecycle, which is critical when working on assets such as embankments, drainage, tunnels, aqueducts, dams, roads, and demolition projects.
- Clearly identify the scope of work at the commencement of a project and develop a project management plan that defines the scope of work, budget, and resourced schedule. This is necessary for all projects, including the maintenance of building accommodation/facilities, roads and access tracks, and condition assessments.
- Manage the selection of appropriate contractors, contract formation, execution, and administration, which is necessary for projects like the demolition of cloud seeding infrastructure.
- Manage, monitor, and report on the projects throughout their lifecycle to achieve the desired outcome against agreed KPIs (HSE, budget, schedule, and quality), essential for keeping complex projects such as those related to dams and tunnels on track.
- Frequently inspect and monitor works to achieve quality, specification, and throughput requirements, ensuring the long-term reliability and safety of infrastructure like embankments, drainage, and roads.
- Actively engage with the range of stakeholders who have input to the project during all phases, particularly for high-profile assets like dams and public-facing infrastructure.

Situated on the Monaro Plains, it provides easy access to Kosciuszko National Park, offering year-round recreational opportunities such as skiing/snowboarding in winter (Thredbo and Perisher are accessible), hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and water sports in the warmer months.
For those looking to relocate to the region, relocation support is offered for a warm, smooth, and supportive transition to the beautiful Snowy Mountains region, assisting the successful candidate and their family with the move.
This role requires 100% site presence during a certain phase of project delivery. Outside of these phases, the role is hybrid with a minimum of 3 days required in an office.
About you
- Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to execute tasks from inception to completion, which should include experience delivering smaller value projects (up to $10 million).
- A civil or structural engineering background, preferably with an engineering qualification, coupled with project management training (PM training).
- Experience in civil infrastructure, including assets such as tunnels, aqueducts, bridges, and dams, and general civil structural work related to hydro generation.
- Proven ability to work autonomously and effectively, both on site and remotely, with a sound knowledge of construction staging and OH&S, EEO, and Environmental policies, procedures, and standards.
- Highly developed interpersonal and negotiating skills to work effectively with personnel at all levels and with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience in the contracting or construction management side, ideally within a brownfield environment, managing contractors and client-side expectations.
