What They Do
Seras is a UK-based biomass fuel and waste-wood logistics specialist that converts commercial waste wood into sustainable biomass fuel for power generation (source: seras.co.uk). The company operates a vertically integrated supply chain encompassing collection, processing, storage, and delivery of biomass fuel to power plants across the UK (source: seras.co.uk). Supplying approximately 1.7 million tonnes of UK-sourced biomass annually, Seras serves six of the largest biomass power stations under long-term contracts, positioning itself as the UK’s largest biomass fuel supplier (source: seras.co.uk). Its operations include commercial waste wood management and skip services primarily in the North West and Yorkshire regions (source: seras.co.uk). The company’s biomass fuel supply is equivalent to powering around 650,000 homes annually, emphasizing its role in circular economy practices by diverting waste wood from landfill (source: seras.co.uk).
Projects & Track Record
Seras’ track record is built on long-term exclusive fuel supply contracts with six of the UK’s largest biomass power plants, many extending until the mid-2030s, demonstrating a stable and strategic market position (source: seras.co.uk). The company operates five waste-wood storage and processing facilities across the UK, supporting its national footprint and operational capacity (source: seras.co.uk). A key regulatory milestone includes the Environmental Permit issued in July 2023 for the Foundry Lane Biomass Processing Plant in Widnes, underscoring compliance and operational legitimacy (source: gov.uk). Under Pioneer Point Partners’ ownership, Seras invested over £13 million in its first year and more than £26 million by its second year to upgrade biomass fuel production, processing equipment, storage facilities, skip services, and its specialist vehicle fleet, reflecting significant capital commitment to growth and modernization (source: seras.co.uk and seras.co.uk).
Recent Developments
The company underwent a significant rebranding from Esken Renewables to Seras in October 2024 following its acquisition by Pioneer Point Partners in December 2023, marking a new chapter in its corporate identity and strategic direction (source: seras.co.uk). In December 2024, Seras announced an investment of over £13 million in its first year under new ownership, followed by a further investment exceeding £13 million in its second year, totaling more than £26 million to enhance its operational capabilities (source: seras.co.uk and seras.co.uk). Additionally, the company updated its sustainability initiatives in 2025, including progress toward ISO 45001 certification at its Tilbury site, highlighting its commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards (source: seras.co.uk).
Working There
Seras employs approximately 300 people across operations, logistics, processing, commercial waste-wood services, transport, and fuel supply, supported by a fleet of over 100 specialist vehicles and multiple regional bases including Widnes, Penrith, Rotherham, Pollington, Middlesbrough, Tilbury, Newport, and Swansea (source: seras.co.uk). The company’s workforce includes roles in plant operations, fleet management, waste-wood collection and processing, compliance, health, safety and environmental quality (HSEQ), and business support functions, reflecting a diverse and integrated operational model (source: linkedin.com).
