About Hydrogenious LOHC

Company Overview

Name

Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies GmbH, privately held

Headquarters

Erlangen, Germany

Founded

2013

Size

The company has employed approximately 200 to 500 people in recent years (source: linkedin.com). Annual revenue for 2024 is estimated at around 8.3 million USD (source: rocketreach.co).

What They Do

Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies specializes in the development and commercialization of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC), particularly based on benzyl toluene. This technology enables the storage, transport, and release of hydrogen under ambient conditions using conventional liquid fuel infrastructure (source: hydrogenious.net). The company offers comprehensive solutions including storage and release plants, operation and maintenance services, as well as logistics, often in EPC partnerships with Bilfinger (source: rocketreach.co). Target markets include industrial customers such as refineries, chemical plants, infrastructure developers, logistics companies, and maritime operators involved in hydrogen import, storage, and distribution infrastructure (source: hydrogenious.net). The technology is distinguished by high storage density and safe handling at ambient temperature, enabling the use of existing liquid fuel logistics (source: hydrogenious.net).

Projects & Track Record

A flagship project is the "Hector" plant at Chempark Dormagen, North Rhine-Westphalia, recognized as the world’s largest facility for storing green hydrogen using LOHC technology. This RFNBO-certified storage plant was officially approved in 2025 and marks a milestone for the industrial scale-up of LOHC technology (source: hydrogenious.net, chemie.de). Another significant initiative is the "Green Hydrogen @ Blue Danube" project, the first LOHC hub in Central Europe with a hydrogen release capacity of up to 1,800 tons per year. Commercial operation is planned for mid-2028, with a release plant at the Bayernoil refinery site in Vohburg (source: hydrogenious.net). Additionally, Hydrogenious operates the "One Reactor" project, a medium-scale plant testing LOHC technology with a capacity of up to 300 kg of hydrogen per day (source: hydrogenious.net). In hydrogen logistics, the H2A platform, developed jointly with Evos and the Port of Amsterdam, represents another milestone for large-scale import chains (source: onlinelibrary.wiley.com).

Recent Developments

Over the past two years, Hydrogenious has made significant progress in project development and market expansion. In January 2026, the company launched the "LOHC Bridge" project in cooperation with IRESEN and SC Zone to explore hydrogen trade routes from North Africa to Europe (source: hydrogenious.net). In February 2026, recognition of LOHC plants as projects of overriding public interest under the German Hydrogen Acceleration Act was highlighted (source: hydrogenious.net). In April 2026, the company commented on the strengthening of the RFNBO pathway under RED III as a positive market signal (source: hydrogenious.net). In July 2025, Hydrogenious publicly supported the implementation of RED III in Germany (source: hydrogenious.net). Furthermore, in October 2025, the FEED and EPCM contract for the Blue Danube project was awarded (source: hydrogenious.net).

Working There

Hydrogenious LOHC employs professionals primarily in engineering, project management, operations and maintenance, technology development, and business development. The organization is highly technology-focused with an emphasis on industrial plant development and commercialization, rather than end-customer sales (source: rocketreach.co). Main locations are in Erlangen and Neuss, Germany, with additional activities in Norway through the maritime subsidiary and project sites in Dormagen, Vohburg, and Amsterdam (source: linkedin.com). The company culture is characterized by deep technical expertise, international project collaboration, and a strong focus on safe and efficient hydrogen infrastructure (source: hydrogenious.net).
