Utility-Scale Solar Jobs in Renewable Energy
Utility-scale solar encompasses photovoltaic power plants - typically exceeding 5 MW - that generate electricity for wholesale markets, requiring engineers, construction specialists, and asset managers to develop, build, and operate sites spanning hundreds of hectares. The global solar energy workforce reached 7.3 million jobs in 2024, and utility-scale projects account for a growing share as the segment now dominates new capacity additions worldwide.
What utility-scale solar work involves
The distinction from rooftop solar is not just size - it changes the nature of every role. Development teams spend years securing land rights, grid connection agreements, and environmental permits for sites covering 200-500 hectares. Construction requires coordinating civil works, pile driving, tracker installation, and electrical balance-of-plant across timelines measured in months rather than days. Once operational, solar O&M technicians manage vegetation, tracker alignment, inverter performance, and panel cleaning at scales where a 0.5% efficiency gain translates to millions in additional revenue over a project's 30-year lifetime.
Bifacial modules paired with single-axis trackers have become the standard configuration for new ground-mounted plants, with over 50% of systems globally now using this setup. The combination delivers roughly 25% more energy than fixed-tilt monofacial installations, creating demand for specialists in albedo modelling, backtracking algorithms, and terrain-adaptive system design.
Where the jobs are
The EU installed 65.1 GW of solar in 2025, with utility-scale projects accounting for more than half of total deployment for the first time. Germany and Spain led the market, driven by large-scale development as rooftop incentives slowed. Globally, 647 GW of solar PV was added in 2025, pushing cumulative capacity past 2.9 TW.
As more utility-scale solar comes online, negative wholesale electricity prices during peak solar hours are becoming frequent in several European markets. This is reshaping the commercial side of the business, increasing demand for professionals who can structure power purchase agreements, manage merchant risk, and integrate battery storage to shift output to higher-value hours.
Employers range from dedicated EPC contractors like SOLV Energy and Signal Energy to vertically integrated developers such as JUWI and Clearway Energy Group. Technology companies like Terabase Energy focus on automating utility-scale construction through robotics and software - a growing niche as the industry confronts labour shortages while scaling deployment.
Roles and skills in demand
Job titles span the full project lifecycle: EPC project managers, site managers, civil superintendents, structural design engineers, controls engineers, and service technicians. Financial roles are equally prominent - asset managers, FP&A analysts, and development coordinators manage portfolios where individual projects represent $100 million or more in capital.
IRENA has flagged that renewable energy capacity additions are significantly outpacing skilled workforce development, particularly in construction and commissioning. For utility-scale, experience with high-voltage systems, grid connection processes, and large-scale photovoltaic systems commands a premium. Familiarity with SCADA platforms, drone-based inspection, and predictive maintenance tools that monitor fleets of hundreds of MW is increasingly expected, as is the ability to work across the technical-commercial boundary where engineering decisions have direct revenue implications.
