What They Do

FuturEnergy Ireland specializes in the development of onshore renewable energy projects across Ireland, focusing primarily on wind farms and battery storage solutions (source: futurenergyireland.ie). Established as a private joint venture, the company leverages expertise in project management, engineering, GIS mapping, wind resource analysis, planning, grid infrastructure development, and community engagement to deliver sustainable energy assets (source: orsted.com). Their ambition is to develop over 1 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, which would power approximately 730,000 homes annually and reduce carbon emissions by more than 1.1 million tonnes per year (source: futurenergyireland.ie). The company emphasizes local community support and aims to maximize Ireland's wind and land resources to accelerate the country's low-carbon transition (source: esb.ie).

In addition to wind energy, FuturEnergy Ireland has expanded its technology portfolio to include long-duration energy storage. In March 2026, it announced a partnership with Form Energy to deploy a pioneering 10 MW / 1,000 MWh iron-air battery system in northwest Ireland, marking the first such project in Europe (source: formenergy.com). This battery system is designed to provide continuous discharge at full power for up to 100 hours, with future projects potentially scaling storage capacity up to 8 GWh (source: futurenergyireland.ie).

Projects & Track Record

FuturEnergy Ireland manages a portfolio of more than 20 active clean energy projects throughout Ireland, demonstrating a strong presence in the renewable sector (source: formenergy.com). One of its flagship projects, the Lenalea Wind Farm in County Donegal, saw its first turbines completed in June 2023, marking a significant milestone in the company’s operational achievements (source: futurenergyireland.ie). The company has also secured planning permissions and is actively developing several other wind farms, including Carrownagowan, Ballinagree, Drumnahough, Castlebanny, Sheskin South, and Scart Mountain, as well as proposed sites in Clare and Waterford (source: futurenergyireland.ie).

FuturEnergy Ireland has collaborated with major industry players such as Ørsted and SSE Renewables, jointly securing planning consents for projects like Ballinagree and Glenora Wind Farms, respectively (source: futurenergyireland.ie). In 2023, the company formalized a strategic framework agreement with Greencoat Renewables to commercialize over 1 GW of its onshore wind portfolio, with plans to sell more than 500 MW to Greencoat by 2030 (source: futurenergyireland.ie). The company also emphasizes community engagement through benefit funds and co-development partnerships with key sector stakeholders such as ART and Ventolines (source: futurenergyireland.ie).

Recent Developments

In March 2025, FuturEnergy Ireland was honored with the Green Small Organisation of the Year Award at the Green Awards, recognizing its contributions to sustainable energy development (source: futurenergyireland.ie). In September 2024, the company submitted a planning application for the Ballynahone Energy Storage project in Donegal, which is set to be Europe’s first iron-air battery storage facility with a capacity of 10 MW / 1,000 MWh (source: futurenergyireland.ie).

Further advancing this initiative, in March 2026 FuturEnergy Ireland and Form Energy announced a formal agreement to deploy the iron-air battery system, marking a significant technological milestone in European energy storage (source: formenergy.com). The company also received a STEP Seal from the European Commission for the Ballynahone project, earned a silver award for the Carrownagowan Wind Farm at the Chambers Ireland Awards, and was shortlisted in three categories at the Irish Renewable Energy Awards in 2026 (source: futurenergyireland.ie).

Working There

FuturEnergy Ireland operates as a small, highly skilled team of approximately 50 employees who enjoy flexible remote working arrangements, with optional access to offices in Dublin 2, Cork, and Coillte regional locations (source: futurenergyireland.ie). The team encompasses diverse roles across planning, project development, grid infrastructure, ecology, engineering, GIS mapping, wind analysis, and community engagement, reflecting the company’s multidisciplinary approach to renewable energy development (source: orsted.com). The culture emphasizes a collaborative small-team environment, strong local community partnerships, and a shared commitment to advancing Ireland’s energy transition (source: futurenergyireland.ie).

FuturEnergy Ireland also maintains dedicated contact points for landowners and service providers, facilitating effective communication and partnership through specific email addresses such as [email protected] and [email protected] (source: futurenergyireland.ie).
