About Capital Power

Company overview

Capital Power Corporation, a publicly traded independent power producer

Edmonton, AB, Canada

2009

Approximately 730 employees globally (source: capitalpower.com). Revenue of C$3.720 billion in 2025 (source: capitalpower.com).

What they do

Capital Power Corporation develops, owns, operates, and optimizes a diverse portfolio of electricity-generation facilities across Canada and the United States. Their business model blends merchant power-market exposure with long-term power purchase agreements, tolling arrangements, and capacity contracts, enabling revenue from both electricity-market prices and contracted availability payments (source: capitalpower.com). The company’s generation assets include natural-gas combined-cycle and simple-cycle plants, coal-fired units, wind farms, utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, and cogeneration facilities, reflecting a broad technology mix rather than exclusive focus on renewables (source: capitalpower.com). Natural gas plays a key role in their growth strategy due to its dispatchable nature, with recent acquisitions adding approximately 2.2 GW of gas-fired capacity in the U.S. PJM market (source: capitalpower.com). Capital Power also serves utilities, commercial and industrial customers, power marketers, and wholesale markets in major North American regions including Alberta, Ontario, California, Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, and PJM (source: capitalpower.com).

Projects & track record

Capital Power’s Genesee Generating Station near Warburg, Alberta, is a flagship facility that transitioned from coal to natural gas through the Genesee Repowering project completed in 2024, enhancing operational flexibility and supporting the company’s coal phase-out strategy (source: capitalpower.com). The Halkirk 2 Wind project, a 150-MW wind farm in Alberta, commenced commercial operation in December 2025, expanding the company’s renewable footprint (source: capitalpower.com). In Ontario, the Goreway Power Station is a natural-gas facility complemented by battery storage assets including the 50-MW Goreway Battery Energy Storage System and the 120-MW York Battery Energy Storage System, both supported by long-term contracts through 2047 and expected to generate approximately C$35 million in annual EBITDA (source: capitalpower.com). The company’s 2025 acquisition of the Hummel and Rolling Hills natural-gas plants in Pennsylvania added about 2.2 GW of capacity and established Capital Power’s presence in the PJM market, with the transaction valued at approximately US$2.2 billion (source: capitalpower.com). Additionally, the East Windsor Expansion, a 106-MW natural-gas project in Ontario, was under development with commercial operation expected in 2026 (source: capitalpower.com). Utility-scale solar projects such as Hornet Solar, Bear Branch Solar, and Maple Leaf Solar in North Carolina are also underway, targeting commercial operation in the second half of 2026 (source: capitalpower.com).

Recent developments

In June 2025, Capital Power completed a major acquisition of the Hummel and Rolling Hills natural-gas facilities, adding approximately 2.2 GW of capacity and expanding its footprint into the PJM market, significantly increasing exposure to U.S. capacity and energy markets (source: capitalpower.com). The Halkirk 2 Wind project was commissioned in December 2025, alongside the completion of 170 MW of battery storage capacity in Ontario, further diversifying the company’s renewable and storage portfolio (source: capitalpower.com). Contract extensions were secured for the Midland Cogeneration Venture through 2040 and Arlington Valley through 2038, providing long-term revenue visibility (source: capitalpower.com). Financially, 2025 was a growth year with revenue of C$3.720 billion, adjusted EBITDA rising to C$1.580 billion, and adjusted funds from operations increasing to C$1.066 billion, reflecting the company’s expanding scale and operational performance (source: capitalpower.com).
