The Apprentice Program is targeted at accelerating your development and providing you with the opportunity to work on significant infrastructure projects that will shape the future of the energy industry in Australia, including connecting renewable energy to the network. As an apprentice with Transgrid, you can look forward to hands-on learning and development in a supportive and stimulating environment.

Streams
Electrical Substation Technician Apprenticeship
As an Electrical Substation Technician Apprentice you will receive industry leading training and technical experience building, maintaining and running diagnostic test and repairs on High Voltage equipment ranging up to 500kV Transformer, Circuit Breakers and other primary and secondary plant.
You will also be working towards completing a Certificate III in Electrotechnology – Electrician and participating in Transgrid’s well established Substation Development Program, where you’ll develop specialised technical capabilities to become future Substation Technicians.
Transmission Lines Technician Apprenticeship
As a Transmission Line Technician Apprentice you’ll be at the forefront of the transition to clean energy. You will be building, maintaining, inspecting and repairing the largest Transmission Network in Australia.
All this while traveling to remote and unique locations, receiving training and experience from industry experts and working towards a Certificate III in ESI – Transmission Overhead.

Eligibility criteria
To be considered, you must have:
- Completed high school studies (minimum year 10 or equivalent) by the end of 2025 and have sound mathematics and communication skills
- A genuine interest in a trade working within a high voltage electricity transmission network
- A current driver’s licence or be willing to obtain one as soon as possible after appointment
- Environmentally and socially responsible
- A team player, motivated and willing to learn
- Able to think laterally and to provide input to innovative solutions to complex problems
- Able to work well with others
- A clear communicator
- Appreciative and sensitive of difference and diversity
- An Australian permanent resident or an Australian or New Zealand citizen
- Ability to travel and work away from home at various locations when required
- The ability to start in January 2026
How to apply
Step 1: Submit application
When applying, you will need to submit an up-to-date resume and provide details of your work experience, qualifications and referees.
Step 2: Online selection test
Once applications have closed if you have progressed to the next stage of the recruitment process, you will be emailed an invitation to complete online selection test that can be done in your own time. This test measures your ability relating to the advertised role within the electrical industry as a technical. All results will remain confidential to Transgrid.
Step 3: Interview and practical assessment
You will receive an email informing of whether you will progress to the next stage. This will involve:
- A 30-minute online numeracy skills test
- A 30-minute panel interview
- A 30-minute practical assessment
Step 4: Pre-employment checks
You will be informed of the outcome of your interview via email or phone. If you are successful you will be subject to Transgrid’s pre-employment assessments, which will include reference checks, criminal history record check, medical check, qualification checks etc.
Note: Not all candidates that go through Stage 4: Pre-employment Assessments will be offered a position.
Step 5: Offer of employment
Upon successful completion of all assessments, you may be contacted to confirm a place in the Apprenticeship Program.
This offer will be formalised with an appointment letter and new starter information package.
