Transmission & Distribution Jobs in Renewable Energy

Transmission and distribution (T&D) professionals plan, design, build, and maintain the physical power networks, from high-voltage lines, cables, and cross-border interconnectors to substations and local distribution grids, that carry electricity from wind and solar plants to homes and industry. The networks have become the transition's main constraint: the IEA counts more than 2,500 GW of renewable, storage, and large-load projects stalled in grid queues worldwide.

Why grids are the bottleneck

A solar farm can be built in one to five years, but the IEA puts planning, permitting, and construction of new grid infrastructure at five to 15 years. Prices for key components such as transformers and cables have nearly doubled in five years, and the agency expects annual grid investment to rise by about 50% by 2030 from today's USD 400 billion. Network owners and their contractors are therefore hiring at every level, from graduate engineers to linespersons, on programmes that run well into the 2030s.

Transmission versus distribution

Transmission covers the high-voltage backbone, typically 132 kV and above in Europe, including HVDC transmission links for offshore wind and interconnectors between countries. The work is project-driven: route selection, consents, tower and cable design, and multi-year construction programmes. Distribution covers the medium- and low-voltage networks that now have to absorb rooftop solar, heat pumps, and EV chargers, and the work is volume-driven: thousands of new connections, reinforcements, and repairs a year. Both depend on substation engineering, and both are short of field staff for power line and cable work, including live-line electricians and cable jointers.

Who is hiring

Scotland is the densest hiring market on Rejobs, with Glasgow, Perth, Inverness, and Aberdeen in the top locations. SSE, headquartered in Perth, is expanding the transmission network in the north of Scotland to bring onshore and offshore wind south, and Scottish Power, part of the Iberdrola group, hires in Glasgow and Cambuslang for the grid in central and southern Scotland. In Australia, TransGrid posts more T&D roles than any other employer as it builds new lines such as HumeLink and the EnergyConnect interconnector to South Australia, with jobs in Sydney and Newcastle. Southern California Edison, Enexis in the Netherlands, and Enel run large distribution networks, and engineering firms such as Ulteig design lines and substations for utilities and developers.

Roles in demand

The listings show project engineers, project managers, site supervisors, and design engineers in the largest numbers, followed by transmission modelling analysts and interconnection project managers, who study how a new wind or solar plant will behave on the network and negotiate its grid connection. Less visible roles fill out the picture: planning engineers who schedule outages and construction in Primavera P6, utility arborists who keep vegetation away from overhead lines, and consents specialists who negotiate with landowners along a route.

Where the field is heading

The IEA estimates that grid-enhancing technologies, such as dynamic line rating and advanced power-flow control, could free enough capacity to connect 450 to 700 GW of stalled projects without new lines. Engineers who can apply those tools, and model networks dominated by inverter-based generation rather than large spinning machines, are the profile that the wider smart grid sector is competing for.
