Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Fueling Systems

CFS is well into the construction phase of our Smallest Possible Affordable Robust Compact (SPARC) fusion machine that will demonstrate commercially-relevant fusion power. In parallel we are advancing the design of our first electrical power-producing fusion device: ARC.

The senior mechanical engineer for the SPARC fueling systems will work closely with the system responsible engineer and technical leads to complete designs and deliver production assemblies of electro-mechanical gas injection systems that deliver process gases into the ultra-high vacuum of SPARC. These systems are designed for inert and hydrogen gas applications, fast response times, operating in rough to high vacuum, and with high leak-tightness with challenging structural and magnetic loads and radiation environments. The senior mechanical engineer will also be responsible for delivering structural mounting assemblies that meet loading conditions from gravity, thermal and electromagnetic conditions. This role will involve design work, systems integration, vendor management, close collaboration with construction, installation and software teams, and hands-on build/test activities.

Fueling systems engineers collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, builders, scientists, vendors, and supply integration managers, and report to the gas fueling system responsible engineer. We are looking for applicants who enjoy collaborating with a variety of disciplines in a fast-paced environment to help us deliver fusion on climate-relevant time scales.

Applicants with hands-on experience with designing, building, testing process systems (gas, fluid, vacuum), and / or experience designing for high radiation and magnetic field environments are preferred.

What you'll do

  • Lead completion of preliminary gas injection equipment designs into production-ready designs and documentation
  • Collaborate with SPARC analysis teams to deliver structural mounts for gas injection equipment
  • Manage vendors to deliver production parts and assemblies on time and in budget
  • Collaborate with SPARC assembly teams to develop and execute plans for gas equipment assembly
  • Collaborate with CFS software and Operations teams to develop and test system functionality
  • Verify system performance using test benches and as a final assembly on SPARC

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree or similar experience in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics
  • Design of complex electro-mechanical equipment
  • Verification / validation of electro-mechanical equipment
  • Management of vendors to produce high quality components and systems to specifications
  • Writing and designing to requirements
  • Analyzing components/assemblies for mechanical stresses
  • Designing / building welded components
  • Working with a manufacturing or assembly or construction team
  • Working within an organization’s design control process
  • Collecting data, reporting results in written and oral formats
  • CAD tools (NX preferred)
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • MS office suite
  • Collaboration tools (Confluence, JIRA, etc)

Bonus points for

  • Designing high vacuum, high pressure gas systems
  • Ansys or other mechanical analysis tools
  • Designing solenoid or other electrical motor driven devices.
  • Working with / designing electro-magnets, designing for magnetic field environments
  • Designing for high radiation environments.
  • Process engineering, developing P&IDs, process flow diagrams
  • Working with a software team to implement system functionality
  • CFD / heat transfer analysis tools
  • Working with PLM tools (Teamcenter preferred)
  • Python or MATLAB programming

Must-have Requirements

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call regularly
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, cryogenics, hazardous gas and radiological hazards

$80,000 - $180,000 a year

Salary range for this full-time position + equity + benefits. The actual salary will depend on level, location, qualifications, and experience. The range displayed on each job posting reflects new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Benefits include:

  • Competitive compensation with equity
  • 12.5 Company-wide Holidays
