About the role

Project-Focused Opportunity: Delivering the Future of Hydropower

The West Coast Scheme Refurbishment Program is a major infrastructure initiative to overhaul and upgrade four hydroelectric generating units (4 x ~ 100MW)—Mackintosh, Bastyan, Reece 1, and Reece 2—within Tasmania’s Pieman River Scheme. These units, commissioned in the early 1980s, are some of the state’s largest generating units.

Project Scope and Complexity

The program, running from 2025 to 2032, will focus on refurbishing turbines by replacing critical components such as top and bottom covers, runners, guide vanes, shafts, and bearings. It includes upgrading ancillary, control and protection systems to ensure safe and reliable operation. The project aims to increase capacity and improve efficiency, particularly during peak load periods.

This is a multi-year, multi-site program requiring seamless coordination across engineering, procurement, construction, logistics, and stakeholder engagement.

Why This Project Matters

This program represents a strategic asset renewal of units that are critical to Tasmania’s energy mix. Their continued operation supports grid stability and helps meet the state’s renewable energy targets. The project is designed for high-impact delivery, mitigating the risk of asset failure, preventing forced outages, and unlocking additional generation capacity. It also sets a new benchmark for innovation in execution, incorporating advanced outage planning, custom tooling, and pre-assembly trials to deliver a modern, efficient approach to Hydro refurbishment.

We are building a dedicated project delivery team to lead this complex transformation. In this role you’ll be critical to enabling quality management through every stage of the lifecycle, from design and manufacture, through to installation and commissioning.

As the Quality Manager, you will:

  • Develop and implement a robust project-wide quality framework.
  • Lead quality planning and assurance across design, manufacturing, fabrication, installation, and commissioning phases.
  • Manage stakeholder quality expectations, create inspection/test strategies, and coordinate 3rd-party QA/QC teams.
  • Drive compliance with Australian and international standards including ISO 9001.
  • Establish and maintain document management systems.
  • Identify risks and implement quality mitigation strategies across project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate inspections, audits and final quality signoffs with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to our continuous improvement culture and create lasting frameworks for future projects.
