Job Description

As a Senior Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) Engineering Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in our company’s mission to develop cutting-edge power conversion systems. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including thermal, electrical, and mechanical engineers, product managers, and R&D specialists. Your expertise will drive innovation, enhance system performance, and contribute to our organization’s success. Candidate must be located in Toronto, Canada.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and compare different battery cells and provide detailed analyses based on cell type, material, performance, design, and characteristic
  • Collaborate with other labs and research institutes regarding current design concepts, materials, and future products
  • Develop and maintain Battery Energy Storage System sizing tool
  • Lead the technical discuss and negotiation with different cell vendors
  • Support designing and configuring the battery module and cell level BMS
  • Evaluate product and system designs and configurations for compliance to relevant industry standards
  • Develop test plans for battery cells and execute them in lab environment ensuring compliance to functional and QA requirements
  • Participate in field testing and commissioning activities by developing test plans and collaborating with the field engineering team to execute and troubleshoot as needed
  • Develop product documentation such as manuals, application notes, and technical specifications
  • Collaborate with the larger team to optimize requirement and needs
  • Drive continues improvement
  • Support marketing research and supply chain initiatives
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for customers and product development programs.
  • Design and optimize thermal management systems for containerized Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) solutions
  • Collaborate on thermal simulation models using CFD and other thermal analysis tools to predict system performance under various operating conditions
  • Analyze and compare different cooling technologies and provide detailed analyses based on performance, cost, efficiency, and reliability
  • Lead technical discussions and negotiations with thermal management component vendors and suppliers
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and control systems teams to ensure integrated thermal solutions
  • Evaluate thermal system designs and configurations for compliance to relevant industry standards and safety requirements
  • Act as the primary technical interface with cooling system suppliers and evaluate new supplier technologies
  • Develop test plans for thermal management systems and support their execution with lab and in field environments
  • Research and implement innovative cooling technologies including liquid cooling, phase change materials, and advanced thermal interface materials
  • Develop product documentation such as thermal design specifications, application notes, and technical manuals
  • Support BMS integration for thermal monitoring and control systems
  • Drive continuous improvement of existing thermal management solutions
  • Support marketing research and supply chain initiatives for thermal components
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal thermal solutions for customers and product development programs

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • MS degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, or related field required; PhD desired
  • 10+ years of thermal management systems experience focused on battery or power electronics cooling applications
  • Familiar with thermal management system design and manufacturing processes
  • Experience analyzing and comparing different cooling technologies and thermal interface materials
  • Knowledgeable on thermal testing requirements and equipment for battery systems
  • Proficiency with CFD software (ANSYS Fluent, Star-CCM+, or similar) and thermal modeling tools
  • Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar) for thermal system design
  • Able to represent the company in technical meetings with vendors, customers, and other government authorities
  • Strong understanding of battery thermal characteristics and thermal management industry requirements
  • Knowledge of heat transfer principles, HVAC systems, and cooling technologies
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work with global team members and vendors in different time zones
  • Familiar with simulation tools such as Matlab/Simulink for thermal system modeling
  • Understanding of international standards (UL, IEC, UN38.3) related to battery thermal safety
  • Flexible and willing to adapt and learn new thermal management technologies
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Experience with phase change materials and advanced cooling technologies is a plus
  • Team player attitude internally and externally
  • Willing to travel up to 20% of the time
