The Director of Accounts Payable is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the accounts payable function, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant processing of company expenditures. This leadership role manages a team of AP professionals (on-site and remote), establishes best practices, drives process improvements within Procure to Pay, and ensures alignment with organizational financial goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the accounts payable team (MD & NC) to ensure accurate and timely payment processing across all company departments and vendors.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve efficiency, internal controls, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end closing activities related to accounts payable, including accruals and account reconciliations.
  • Ensure accurate maintenance of AP records, vendor master files, and tax documentation (e.g., W-9, 1099s).
  • Manage the AP automation tools and ERP systems; work closely with IT and treasury/finance teams on system enhancements or implementations.
  • Monitor KPIs such as Days Payable Outstanding (DPO), payment accuracy, and processing time; generate regular reports for senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with procurement, treasury, and other departments to streamline procure-to-pay processes.
  • Handle complex payment issues, vendor escalations, and dispute resolution in a timely and professional manner. Including vendor inquiry management within the team.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX, GAAP, and corporate policies.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate AP team members; foster a culture of continuous improvement, customer service, respect and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA or CPA a plus).
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounts payable/shared services, with at least 5 years in a leadership or director-level role.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial systems, and internal controls.
  • Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft D365, SAP, Oracle) and AP automation tools.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage large volumes of transactions, and drive process improvements.
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal, customer service and vendor management skills.

Preferred Qualifications - What Will Set You Apart

  • Experience working in private organizations.
  • Background in shared services.
  • Managing remote teams.
  • Familiarity with e-invoicing and electronic payment solutions, OCR and Fresh Desk

Travel requirements

  • Hybrid schedule with 2-3 days on-site per week. Travel as needed.

The final pay offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, the type of years and experience within the industry, education, training, etc.

Salary Range

$162,225 - $175,000 USD
