Software Engineering Manager

Job Description

The Software Engineer Manager is responsible for overseeing the creation of Freedom Forever’s proprietary software tools.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Identifying processes that could be improved by building our own tool
• Creating specs for projects
• Creating timelines for project completion
• Prioritizing department’s tasks
• Managing a team of software engineering employees
• Developing, implementing, and enforcing systems, processes, and procedures within the department
• Defining, tracking, and implement project timelines, objectives, and specifications
• Retaining existing employees
• Providing feedback, growth opportunities, and coaching for employees
• Recruiting, interviewing, and on-boarding new developers
• Communicating with the rest of the company
• Providing support for internal employees, third party contractors, and customers

Qualification Requirements

Education & Certifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer information system, software engineering or similar degree.

Experience

• 5+ years of Experience as a Web Developer
• 3+ years managing a software engineering team

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Comfortable speaking in front of large groups
• Experience detecting and evaluating issues in web applications, devising appropriate solutions within constraints, and executing on those solutions
• Experience dealing with non-technical co-workers or collaborators to translate business needs into technical implementation
• Strong ability to predict complexity, technical debt, and cost-benefit analysis for a given technical implementation
• Significant experience with PHP and JavaScript
• Experience with a PHP-based MVC framework (like Laravel)
• Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (like React, Vue)
• Experience with cloud computing (Amazon Web Services)
• Experience with Git version control
• Experience with build tools (Grunt, Gulp, WebPack, or Rollup)
• Experience with npm-based front-end tooling
• Experience working with small to mid-size web applications

Physical Demands and Abilities

• Regularly spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers
• Regularly move from sitting to standing positions effortlessly
• Regularly see details of objects that are less than a few feet away
• Regularly speak clearly so listeners can understand
• Regularly understand the speech of another person
• Frequently work on projects that require deadlines
• Occasionally lift 10-15 pounds
