Job Description

Climate Central is seeking a Civic Science Fellow to serve as our Spanish-Language Engagement Fellow. This 18-month fellowship will be part of the Civic Science Fellows Program, supported by the Rita Allen Foundation (see more below). The Fellow will help us better understand and serve Spanish-language media and the communities they reach, many of whom are on the frontlines of climate change.

The Spanish-Language Engagement Fellow will engage deeply with journalists, meteorologists, social media content creators, scientists, and organizations communicating with Hispanic/Latino communities, to help them drive public understanding about climate change. Over 18 months, they will build relationships and help Climate Central transform the resources and analyses we offer to better serve these communicators and their audiences.

The Senior Engagement Specialist will supervise the Spanish-Language Engagement Fellow. The Fellow will also work closely with our full team of scientists, data analysts, communication professionals, and content creators.

If you are a communicator with a genuine commitment to addressing climate change challenges in Spanish-language communities, we encourage you to apply and be part of our team. This position is a full-time, 18-month fellowship.

More about the Rita Allen Foundation's 2026-28 Civic Science Fellows Program: The program builds a national network of emerging leaders working at the intersection of science, technology, and civic life. Civic Science Fellows are cross-disciplinary communicators and bridge builders who help connect scientific knowledge with community needs. Fellows are embedded in host organizations for 18 months to co-create and pilot projects that advance civic science practice. They also participate in a national learning cohort that includes convenings, workshops, and peer exchange, which will launch in September 2026.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with Spanish-language journalists, meteorologists, social media content creators, scientists, and organizations serving Hispanic/Latino communities
  • Expand partnerships and lead outreach/engagement projects with these communicators through planning, execution, and evaluation
  • Research how these communities consume and share information about weather and climate change, and how these topics are discussed in Spanish-language media
  • Incorporate learnings from that research to build the capacity of Spanish-language communicators to speak about climate change science, impacts, and solutions
  • Collaborate with Climate Central colleagues to develop analyses and media resources tailored to Spanish-language communicators
  • Organize and lead briefings/webinars in Spanish for journalists and media partners
  • Provide recorded and written quotes on climate and weather in Spanish for use by Spanish-language media

Required Skills and Experience

  • Professional or near-native fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English. Candidates should be able to communicate confidently and professionally in both languages across written, verbal, and interpersonal settings, across diverse Spanish-speaking audiences.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and digital communication skills
  • Experience with explaining complex science in clear, easy-to-understand language that is accessible to a large and varied audience
  • Experience with community engagement in Hispanic/Latino communities
  • Ability to conduct research - including interviews, desk research, and media analysis - and synthesize insights into strategic recommendations and actionable strategy
  • Demonstrated interest in climate change, weather, civic science, science communication, and journalism
  • Excellent collaboration skills with a track record of fostering lasting relationships with both colleagues and external partners, resulting in impactful outcomes
  • Strong coordination skills and experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member with colleagues of varied backgrounds and experiences

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Training or experience in meteorology, climate science, or other related science
  • Experience working with the media, including participating in media appearances
  • Experience working in a remote-first environment, which requires regular virtual meetings and asynchronous communication

Compensation

The annual salary for this fellowship position is $85,000.

Climate Central offers generous benefits including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • More than 7 weeks of combined vacation and holidays annually
  • 12 weeks of paid family leave
  • 401(k) with up to 12% employer matching
  • Partial college tuition support for children of eligible employees

Location and Eligibility

This position is primarily remote, in accordance with Climate Central policy. Periodic travel to headquarters in Princeton, NJ or other locations may be required for team meetings and events.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Climate Central is not able to sponsor or transfer employment visas for this position.
