New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act) has created the most aggressive climate change goals in the nation and requires an ambitious agenda that blends proven catalysts with innovative approaches while operating across a broader energy arena that is rapidly evolving. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) is a driving force in realizing this agenda. NYSERDA works with stakeholders that span residents, business owners, developers, community leaders, local government officials, universities, utilities, investors, entrepreneurs, and more, to develop, invest, and foster conditions that:

  • Attract the private sector capital investment needed to expand New York’s clean energy economy.
  • Overcome barriers to using clean energy at a large-scale in New York.
  • Enable New York’s communities and residents to benefit equitably from energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Job Overview

The Assistant Director, NY-Sun assists the Director in the NY-Sun team unit in the development of a strategy to meet NYSERDA’s goals and objectives. The Assistant Director assists in developing and implementing work plans, initiatives, and strategy. The Assistant Director maintains budgets and financial projections and tracking; provides accurate and timely reporting of performance metrics; and helps maintain other regulatory/statutory reporting requirements.

The Assistant Director, NY-Sun serves as liaison with internal and external stakeholders to support the successful execution of the department’s strategy and goals. The Assistant Director provides contract and project management oversight to the team’s Program, Project, and other Managers.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director in the development and implementation of a distributed solar sector strategy designed to achieve program goals, including the State’s 10 GW by 2030 mandate, and contributing toward NYSERDA’s overarching goals.
  • Provide tracking and reporting oversight of fiscal and operational matters relating to the NY-Sun team.
  • Coordinate and manage cross-functional teams and workstreams across the NY-Sun team, Integrated Energy Solutions department, and different NYSERDA departments as well as managing direct reports.
  • Contribute to aspects of strategic decision making and policy development and provide analysis and recommendations regarding the impact, costs, stakeholder needs, policy alignment, and potential impacts of such decisions.
  • Develop strategy for RFP, PON and other solicitations, review all documents to ensure team objectives are likely to be met. Ensure programs align with the requirements from the funding source and have funds available in approved budgets.
  • Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with vendors to ensure NYSERDA's interests are promoted and protected in support of the above, and in accordance with NYSERDA and New York State Procurement Policies.
  • Develop Statements of Work, provide oversight, feedback and review of all tasks and deliverables and approve invoices for assigned contracts.
  • Collaborate with members of the NY-Sun team and others to implement policies in an efficient and informed manner which is consistent with policy objectives.
  • Impart a deep and broad base of technical and sector knowledge into the development and implementation of the team’s strategy.
  • Support the key focus areas including competitive procurements; contract management; workforce development; business development; support of sector specific working groups and industry partnerships; leading relevant research projects; and extensive proactive stakeholder engagement, and public speaking.
  • Establish productive working relationships with related management and staff, contractors, and other interested stakeholders in order to expand the efficacy of processes.
  • Drive projects and policies forward by gathering and effectively organizing required information, communicating effectively and professionally with internal and external stakeholders, developing and monitoring plans, and overseeing the responsibilities and commitments of the team members.
  • Represent NYSERDA at conferences, meetings, and other forums.
  • Perform other responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform all managerial and supervisory responsibilities with respect, fairness, consistency, and inclusion across the workforce.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 8 years of relevant experience with at least 4 years in a supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated capacity and ability to envision, design, communicate and implement complex results-oriented strategic plans with an action bias.
  • Project management and leadership skills including the ability to work as a team leader and team member, maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliver on commitments.
  • Subject matter expertise and related experience in policy, technical, and/or business topics related to distributed solar development.
  • Highest level of communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives and recommendations.
  • Self-starter who acts independently, directs one’s own work and can handle diverse tasks quickly and accurately within a high-performance environment.
  • Keen awareness of regulations and other factors that affect decision-making of partners, customers, and other stakeholders.
  • Exceptional manager, coach, mentor, and developer of talent; an ability to lead and develop a team to achieve their potential.
  • Perform all managerial and supervisory responsibilities with respect, fairness, consistency, and inclusion across the workforce.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability; resourcefulness, adaptability, and an instinct for surfacing value and pragmatic solutions.
  • Top-notch presentation and interpersonal skills that resonate with audiences of diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and 6 years’ experience with demonstrated success in setting strategy and delivering services at scale or scope within business or government operating environments and at least 4 years in a supervisory role.

Salary

The salary range is $123,793 - $156,224 annually. Candidates will be considered based on qualifications and experience. An excellent benefits package is offered.
