PowerFlex is seeking an Associate Director of Solar/BESS Operations to lead day-to-day operations and long-term performance of a growing portfolio of distributed energy assets. This role is part of the Asset Optimization & Customer Success team, which ensures that PowerFlex’s operating projects perform in accordance with internal and external requirements, including safe operation, minimal downtime, and maximum operational and financial performance. This role owns operational excellence across C&I solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and hybrid sites, ensuring safety, reliability, and customer satisfaction while building scalable processes, systems, and teams. The position requires demonstrated experience in system implementation, process optimization, technical expertise and personnel management
Location
This role is open to be a hybrid role (3-days in office) out of one of our offices (Mountain View, CA, San Diego, CA or New York, NY.)
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Operations team, including headcount planning, hiring, coaching, performance management, and resource allocation across sites and functions.
- Provide technical expertise and guidance to the team in PV/BESS operations, performance analysis, site controls, and grid-interconnection requirements; serve as an escalation point for complex operational issues.
- Establish and continuously improve scalable, standardized processes and digital systems for monitoring, work management, reporting, and vendor oversight
- Support data and analytics initiatives, including CMMS configuration/integration
- Ensure all work complies with current OSHA, NEC, and applicable local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) codes and regulations; establish, document, and maintain emergency response procedures
- Oversee the management and optimization of PowerFlex- and third-party–owned operating projects, including system monitoring and alarm response, customer service/issue resolution, preventive and corrective maintenance, inventory/spares, and warranty/RMA management.
- Track and improve overall operational performance, including availability/uptime, production actuals vs. forecast, degradation, clipping/curtailment analysis, BESS round-trip efficiency and state-of-health
- Ensure the group maintains a qualified portfolio of O&M providers and subcontractors to support timely and high-quality field services; manage vendor performance, safety compliance, and commercial terms.
- Partner with Construction/Commissioning to ensure smooth handoffs, punchlist closure, documentation completeness (as-builts, test reports, single-line diagrams), and readiness for operations;
- Develop and validate annual operating plans, budgets, and performance targets for Solar/BESS Operations team; report monthly/quarterly on KPI trends, variances to plan, and corrective actions
- Establish and maintain a feedback loop with the Execution team to evaluate hardware performance, vendor support quality, and overall product effectiveness
- Contribute to customer reporting and executive-level communications and advise the teach on commercial decision

- Proactively drive customer success for strategic accounts by anticipating needs, delivering exceptional service, tracking customer health metrics, and implementing corrective actions to secure long‑term partnerships and sustained business during contracting processes
Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field
- 7+ years experience in renewable energy operations with 5+ years focused on distributed systems (Solar / BESS)
- 3+ years experience managing teams and budgets
- Strong technical grounding in PV/BESS systems: inverters, protection and controls, EMS/SCADA, site networking, telemetry, metering, and utility interconnection.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to concisely communicate results verbally and through PowerPoint
- Ability to co-manage personal workflow with the training and supervision of others
- Demonstrated success in team leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and customer engagement.
- Ability to drive process improvements, operational efficiencies, and strategic growth initiative
- Safety-first orientation and compliance rigor.
Compensation
The pay range for this position is $126,090 - $154,110 annually. This position is eligible for PowerFlex's comprehensive Health and Welfare plans including but not limited to medical, dental, vision, 401(k) retirement plan and paid time off. The total compensation for this position may include an annual performance bonus (or other incentive compensation, as applicable). PowerFlex's compensation packages carefully consider a candidate's qualifications, experiences, and education in relation to the position.
Supervision of others
Supervises a team of 3–5 staff by assigning tasks, providing guidance, and overseeing daily operations. Responsibilities include hiring, scheduling, training, performance feedback, and making recommendations on promotions, salary changes, and other employment actions.
Physical Requirements
Remaining in a seated position. Long hours on computer keyboard. Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking.
Working Conditions
Approximately 90% of the time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Adobe etc.), telephones, and general office equipment. Possibly 10% of the time is spent traveling to conferences or meetings or field traveling to project sites.
