What They Do

A Climate to Thrive is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering community-led climate resilience and renewable energy initiatives. Unlike traditional commercial renewable energy development, it emphasizes grassroots projects aimed at achieving energy independence for Mount Desert Island by 2030 (source: ioby.org). The organization focuses on decentralized renewable energy solutions and climate resiliency, prioritizing community implementation over specific technologies such as solar panels or wind turbines (source: mainecan.network). Its services include program facilitation, technical assistance, peer-to-peer resource sharing, and resilience planning, exemplified by its support for the town of Tremont's Community Resilience Plan, which addresses critical issues like sea level rise and energy insecurity (source: causeiq.com). Target markets include small coastal and island communities in Maine, particularly residents of Mount Desert Island and towns like Tremont, serving a diverse range of stakeholders through equitable and collaborative models (source: rd.usda.gov).

Projects & Track Record

Among its notable projects, A Climate to Thrive completed the Tremont Community Resilience Plan in March 2024, which was adopted by town vote shortly thereafter. This plan integrated valuable input from local residents and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, aiming to address the community's climate vulnerabilities (source: rd.usda.gov). While specific renewable energy projects with measurable capacities are not publicly detailed, the organization focuses on planning and coordination rather than physical infrastructure (source: rd.usda.gov). Ongoing initiatives include the overarching goal of achieving energy independence for Mount Desert Island by 2030, supported by programs like the Hancock County efforts and a recently launched monthly mentor series for clean energy activists (source: ioby.org). Key partnerships with organizations such as the Island Institute and Gulf of Maine Research Institute enhance its capacity for community engagement and resource sharing (source: rd.usda.gov).

Recent Developments

In the past two years, A Climate to Thrive celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a potluck at Beech Hill Farm in October 2025, marking a decade of impactful community action that began with informal gatherings in 2015 (source: barharborstory.substack.com). The organization played a crucial role in supporting the adoption of the Tremont Resilience Plan in 2024, facilitated by an Island Institute Fellow funded through a $201,000 USDA Rural Community Development Initiative Grant awarded to the Island Institute in November 2023 (source: rd.usda.gov). Additionally, A Climate to Thrive launched a monthly mentor series aimed at clean energy transition activists, reported in late 2023 or early 2024, furthering its commitment to community engagement and education (source: themainemonitor.org). While there have been no acquisitions or mergers recorded for the organization, its recognition at the state level has increased, with its 2025 Report detailing recent community-driven actions available on its website (source: aclimatetothrive.org).

Working There

Job opportunities at A Climate to Thrive primarily focus on fellowship positions, such as the two-year Island Institute Fellowship, which has been filled by Brianna Cunliffe (2022-2024) for technical and communications work related to resilience planning. These positions offer comprehensive employee benefits, housing in served communities, mentorship, training, and professional networking (source: rd.usda.gov). Core departments likely include executive leadership, program coordination, community engagement, and technical assistance, with roles based in rural coastal settings on Mount Desert Island (source: rd.usda.gov). The organization fosters a collaborative and relationship-focused culture, rooted in its origins of community potlucks, emphasizing empowerment, equity, creativity, and the importance of making connections across differences (source: barharborstory.substack.com). While specific details about permanent staff benefits are not available, fellows enjoy comprehensive support packages similar to those of Island Institute employees (source: rd.usda.gov). Job seekers are encouraged to check the website or LinkedIn for current fellowship or volunteer opportunities (source: aclimatetothrive.org).
