The Senior Data Scientist for the Transmission Fundamentals team will collaborate with other team members to design and build a unique software tool designed to look beyond the existing RTO/ISO planning processes to identify and evaluate the transmission needs of the future grid, and then use that tool to collaborate with other teams to develop new transmission solutions across the United States and Canada.
This position is part of a team performing technical modeling and analysis to identify, evaluate, and support development of new opportunities on the transmission system. Our goal is to identify opportunities where others have not, and get them built!
We highly value knowledge of the existing processes and also interest in inventing new processes. Successful candidates will have experience in transmission planning as well as developing novel analysis approaches or tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with colleagues to create new analysis tools and models to identify, design, and evaluate new transmission solutions, both within and beyond the current planning process horizons
- Contribute to developing new modeling capabilities, including both traditional modeling and techniques that leverage automation and artificial intelligence/machine learning
- Identify enhancements to state-of-the-art tools to better identify optimal transmission opportunities from the analysis of a multitude of scenarios and sensitivities
- Collaborate with internal and external Subject Matter Experts to arrive at the most cost-effective and competitive transmission solutions
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- A power systems background including experience with ISO/RTO or utility transmission planning or operations
- Experience in data analysis and modeling of power system planning or operations
- Programming skills in Python or Julia and experience with Git
- Experience with common industry analytical tools such as PSS/E, PowerWorld, PowerGEM TARA, PROMOD, GRIDVIEW, Enelytix, PLEXOS or UPLAN
- An understanding of the planning processes within utilities and RTOs/ISOs, including reliability and economic/broader benefit analyses
- An understanding of transmission policy and regulatory issues
- Ability to coordinate activities with multiple internal and external SMEs to drive the completion of a comprehensive set of transmission analyses to identify cost-effective and competitive transmission solutions
Desired Qualifications
- Background in transmission planning, renewable energy, power systems, and energy analysis
- Experience with HPC and/or cloud computing (e.g., AWS)
- Experience with machine learning and AI

Job Overview
This position is responsible for developing algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (i.e., "Big Data").

The base pay range for this position is $120,800.00 to $181,200.00 per year. This range represents the expected base pay for a successful candidate and is based on a variety of factors, including skills, experience, and internal equity.
