Company Overview

CorPower Ocean AB

Stockholm, Sweden

2009

Approximately 80 employees (source: andersnord.com). No public revenue disclosures for 2023 or later.

What They Do

CorPower Ocean focuses exclusively on wave energy technology, developing point absorber wave energy converters (WECs) that harness ocean waves as the world's largest untapped renewable source. Their technology delivers over five times more electricity per tonne of equipment than prior state-of-the-art systems (source: corpowerocean.com). The core products include CorPack modular clusters with capacities ranging from 10-30 MW, which comprise WECs, moorings, anchors, intra-array cables, floating collection hubs, and electrical systems. These are designed for scalable utility-scale wave farms, utilizing a heart-inspired pumping principle with pre-tensioned WaveSpring for phase control, allowing for high efficiency in normal waves and survivability during storms (source: corpowerocean.com).

CorPower's services span the entire project lifecycle, starting from Stage 1 Opportunity Assessment, which includes yield analysis, conceptual design, and cost estimation, to Stage 2 Project Development involving detailed design and finance, and finally Stage 3 Project Delivery, which encompasses manufacturing and installation (source: corpowerocean.com). Their target markets are primarily coastal regions, where they aim to complement existing wind and solar energy sources with stable output, catering to developers, utilities, and governments seeking 24/7 clean energy solutions. Key differentiators include their lightweight composite design and the world's largest 7.2 MW dry-test facility located in Stockholm, which is used for simulated global wave testing (source: corpowerocean.com).

Projects & Track Record

CorPower Ocean has completed notable projects such as the 1:2 scale C3 prototype, which was deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, between 2018 and 2019. This project successfully demonstrated the performance and survivability of their technology. More recently, in September 2023, they installed the first commercial-scale C4 device at Aguçadoura in northern Portugal, which generated electricity in regular sea conditions and survived harsh weather, subsequently being recovered for upgrades before redeployment (source: wikipedia.org). Ongoing major projects include the HiWave-5 demonstration in Portugal, which is supported by a 7.3 million EUR investment from AICEP, and the development of next-generation type-certified devices aimed at bankable farms (source: corpowerocean.com). Their geographic presence spans Sweden, Portugal, Scotland, and Norway, emphasizing local job creation through modular CorPacks for global coastal rollout (source: corpowerocean.com).

Recent Developments

In 2023, CorPower Ocean achieved a significant milestone by deploying and operating the commercial-scale C4 WEC in Aguçadoura, validating both its survivability and electricity generation capabilities. Following this, the device was recovered for maintenance and upgrades, while the company pursued prototype certification (source: eicscalingclub.eu). They are also advancing next-generation devices toward type certification for commercial viability and continuing the execution of the HiWave-5 project (source: corpowerocean.com). In the recently concluded COMPACT project, CorPower partnered with OPS Solutions to develop and test a lightweight composite pre-tension cylinder prototype, targeting PED certification at 900 bar pressure to reduce costs and mass (source: corpowerocean.com). The company has not reported any major acquisitions or mergers, but they continue to grow their team, which now consists of approximately 80 employees (source: eicscalingclub.eu).

Working There

CorPower Ocean offers a variety of roles spanning engineering disciplines such as hydrodynamics, power take-off (PTO), composites, marine operations, machinery integration, and project management. The team, which has grown to approximately 80 employees from 20 different countries, is characterized by a culture that emphasizes courageous problem-solving and diligence in physics-based testing (source: eicscalingclub.eu). Hiring occurs at their Stockholm headquarters, as well as in Viana do Castelo, Oslo, and Stromness, reflecting their diverse operational needs (source: wikipedia.org). The company promotes a mission-driven environment that attracts global talent, with a focus on innovation and practical solutions to complex challenges in wave energy technology (source: corpowerocean.com). While specific employee benefits are not documented, their careers page invites potential candidates to join their mission to "power the planet" alongside partners like EIT InnoEnergy (source: corpowerocean.com).
