IRENA - International Renewable Energy Agency

Company Overview

IRENA - International Renewable Energy Agency

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

2009

Approximately 170 member countries (source: irena.org).

What They Do

IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting the adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy worldwide. Its core focus encompasses a wide array of renewable energy technologies, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean energy, solar photovoltaic, and both onshore and offshore wind. IRENA emphasizes the integration of these technologies across various sectors such as power, heating, cooling, and transport, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors like heavy-duty trucking, shipping, aviation, and industrial processes (source: energyexemplar.com). The agency provides essential services including policy advice, technical analysis, capacity building, and knowledge dissemination, which are crucial for governments and policymakers aiming to transition to renewable energy systems (source: irena.org). Through initiatives like the REmap programme, IRENA produces comprehensive renewable energy roadmaps that assess global, regional, and country-level potentials, utilizing advanced modeling tools to evaluate scenarios up to 2050 (source: irena.org). This positions IRENA as a pivotal player in the global energy transition, supporting both industrialized and developing nations in their renewable energy goals (source: nzero.com).

Projects & Track Record

IRENA does not engage in commercial energy projects but leads significant analytical and advisory initiatives that have measurable impacts on global renewable energy strategies. Notable efforts include the World Energy Transitions Outlook 2024, which outlines pathways to achieve a 1.5°C climate goal through electrification and renewable energy adoption (source: irena.org). The agency also released the Renewable Power Generation Costs study for 2023, which highlights the competitiveness of renewable technologies despite rising material costs, and conducted Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) reviews for 169 member countries to assess their renewable energy targets against climate benchmarks (source: stanford.edu). Ongoing projects include iterations of the REmap programme, which utilize PLEXOS modeling to address grid challenges and enhance stability, alongside thematic reports focusing on decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors and advancing sodium-ion battery technologies for electric vehicles (source: energyexemplar.com).

Recent Developments

In the past two years, IRENA has made significant strides in advancing global renewable energy initiatives. The agency published the Renewable Energy Statistics 2025, which provides comprehensive datasets on worldwide capacity and generation, essential for tracking progress in the renewable sector (source: irena.org). Additionally, reports such as "Enhancing Resilience: Climate-Proofing Power Infrastructure" and "Powering Resilient Islands: Grid Modernisation Toolkit for SIDS" were released to support vulnerable regions in adapting to climate impacts (source: irena.org). The agency's ongoing work includes assessments of NDCs and renewable targets, pushing for ambitious goals to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030, which is critical for meeting global climate commitments (source: stanford.edu). IRENA continues to foster partnerships and collaborations, particularly through initiatives like the Clean Energy Ministerial, which focuses on solar supply chains and innovative technologies (source: pcreee.org).

Working There

IRENA offers a diverse range of roles across various departments, including analysis, policy, innovation, technology, and operations. Positions are available for economists, engineers, data analysts, and professionals focused on renewable energy technologies such as hydrogen and offshore renewables (source: pcreee.org). The agency primarily hires at its Abu Dhabi headquarters and the Bonn Innovation and Technology Centre, with opportunities aligned with member-driven work programs that support its 169 member countries (source: irena.org). IRENA's culture emphasizes global collaboration and knowledge sharing, hosting monthly events that range from small workshops to large forums, fostering youth-led solutions and public-private partnerships (source: wikipedia.org). While specific benefits are not detailed, as an intergovernmental organization, it likely includes standard perks associated with international organizations, such as professional development opportunities and a diverse work environment (source: irena.org).
