Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world's transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people's quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Kairos Power is seeking a Senior Civil Structural Engineer to support the structural design of the reactor building for its Generation IV Nuclear Power Plant, including scaled prototypes and test facilities. As part of the Design Phase Interface Team, this role ensures seamless coordination of structural design across disciplines through technical guidance, clash resolution, stakeholder collaboration, and advanced structural analysis. The ideal candidate will bring leadership, deep technical expertise, and cross-disciplinary communication skills to support high-quality, integrated design outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate regular interface meetings with internal and external stakeholders, including architects, consultants, contractors, and clients.
  • Maintain a comprehensive interface register to document, track, and report on the status of all identified interface points.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on the integration of structural systems with other building and infrastructure components.
  • Review and approve design drawings, specifications, and submittals from various disciplines to ensure compatibility with the structural design.
  • Lead the resolution of technical clashes and discrepancies between different design models and drawings (e.g., BIM clash detection and resolution).
  • Ensure that all design changes are effectively communicated and coordinated across all affected disciplines.
  • Perform and oversee complex structural analysis and design for a variety of structures, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Prepare and review detailed engineering calculations, technical reports, and construction documents.
  • Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers in both technical design and interface management best practices.
  • Serve as the key liaison between the civil/structural team and other project stakeholders.
  • Clearly and concisely communicate complex technical issues and solutions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with all project partners to foster a collaborative and integrated project environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis is required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in civil and structural engineering, with at least 2 years in a senior role on large-scale, multidisciplinary projects.
  • A Master of Science in Structural Engineering is highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • A proactive and results-oriented approach to project challenges.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant design codes and standards (e.g., ASCE, ACI, AISC, IBC).
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software (e.g., SAP2000, ETABS, RISA), as well as BIM platforms (e.g., Revit, Navisworks).
  • Entrepreneurial, flexible, open to new ideas, collaborative in nature with full buy-in to the Kairos Power mission;
  • Team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills; must be able to interact and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Interdisciplinary Design Coordination: Proficient in reviewing and integrating architectural and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) drawings and 3D models.
  • System Knowledge: Understands the spatial, routing, and load implications of MEP systems on structural & architectural design.
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others.
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge.
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues.

Physical Demands

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods

Certification

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in TN is preferred.
  • A Structural Engineer (SE) license is a significant advantage.

  • Requires working weekends (occasionally)
  • Requires extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines (occasionally)

The salary range for this position is $140,600 to $165,400 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that maybe used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, ability and the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
