Sustainability Jobs in Renewable Energy
Sustainability professionals in renewable energy translate climate commitments into measurable outcomes - designing decarbonisation strategies, managing ESG reporting frameworks, and ensuring that clean energy projects meet environmental and social standards throughout their lifecycle. With renewable energy employing 16.6 million people globally in 2024 according to IRENA, the demand for professionals who can bridge technical operations and corporate responsibility has never been sharper.
What distinguishes sustainability work in renewable energy from sustainability roles in other industries is that the product itself is the solution. Rather than retrofitting sustainability onto an inherently extractive business, professionals here work on quantifying and optimising the positive impact - lifecycle assessments of solar panels, biodiversity management around wind farms, supply chain auditing for critical minerals, and community benefit agreements for new projects.
What Employers Are Hiring For
The most common roles - Sustainability Consultant, Sustainability Manager, and Sustainability Specialist - appear across engineering consultancies, energy suppliers, and certification bodies alike. Cundall, a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy with over 500 staff, has been one of the most active hirers, alongside energy suppliers like Octopus Energy and OVO Energy. Certification organisations such as ISCC reflect the growing regulatory infrastructure around sustainability verification.
Senior roles increasingly demand a hybrid skillset. The top job titles include Senior Sustainability Engineer, Senior Sustainability Consultant, and Strategy Project Manager with a circular economy focus - suggesting that employers value professionals who can work across technical and strategic domains.
The CSRD Effect
Europe's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive has reshaped hiring patterns since its phased rollout began. ESG roles across the EU grew 28% year-over-year in 2025, with 82% of new positions requiring data or regulatory expertise. The directive's scope - now covering companies with more than 1,000 employees and €450 million turnover - means that thousands of energy companies need professionals who understand double materiality assessments, ESRS standards, and sustainability data systems. This regulatory pull is strongest in London, Amsterdam, and Berlin, which together account for a significant share of sustainability job postings on Rejobs.
Skills That Command Premiums
LinkedIn's 2025 data shows that workers with green skills are hired at a 46.6% higher rate than the general workforce, and the gap is widening: green hiring grew 7.7% annually between 2024 and 2025, while the supply of green-skilled workers grew only 4.3%. For sustainability professionals specifically, the combination of technical knowledge (lifecycle assessment, carbon accounting, energy auditing) with regulatory fluency (CSRD, EU Taxonomy, science-based targets) commands the highest salary premiums - typically 15-25% above comparable roles without the sustainability component.
Where the Field Is Heading
The shift from generalist sustainability roles to technical specialists is accelerating. Demand is strongest for professionls with expertise in carbon accounting, circular economy strategies, and net zero transition planning. The UK's Clean Energy Jobs Plan targets 860,000 clean energy jobs by 2030, doubling the current figure, with sustainability oversight roles embedded across every sector from offshore wind to building retrofits. For career switchers, the entry points are widening: 43% of workers surveyed by LinkedIn in 2025 expressed interest in roles contributing to energy transition or climate adaptation, with the figure reaching 60% among Gen-Z workers.
