Subsea Cable Package Owner - Wave Energy
CorPower Ocean
Company Overview
What They Do
CorPower Ocean specializes in the development of innovative wave energy converters (WECs), specifically focusing on point absorber devices that utilize a unique "WaveSpring" system. This technology, inspired by the human heart's pumping mechanism, allows for significantly enhanced energy capture, achieving five times more electricity per tonne of equipment compared to traditional methods. The company operates as a turnkey supplier, providing modular clusters of WECs, moorings, anchors, and floating collection hubs, alongside comprehensive project lifecycle services that include opportunity assessments, detailed engineering, and construction management (source).
Targeting utility-scale wave farms, CorPower aims to complement existing renewable energy sources like wind and solar, thereby contributing to a stable, carbon-free energy grid. Their technology is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, featuring lightweight composite designs that reduce costs and enhance efficiency. The company’s commitment to rigorous testing and validation processes ensures that their products are ready for deployment in real-world conditions, setting them apart from legacy wave energy technologies that often struggle with inefficiency and durability (source).
Projects & Track Record
CorPower Ocean has made significant strides in the wave energy sector with notable projects such as the deployment of the C3 prototype at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, in 2018/2019. This project successfully demonstrated the performance and survivability of their technology. More recently, the company launched the commercial-scale C4 WEC in September 2023 in Aguçadoura, Portugal, which achieved a peak output of 600 kW and began exporting power to the Portuguese grid in October 2023 after a successful commissioning period (source).
Recent Developments
In the past two years, CorPower Ocean has achieved several key milestones, including the successful grid export of the C4 WEC and advancements in their COMPACT project, which focuses on developing lightweight composite prototypes for enhanced efficiency. The company has also unveiled industrial-scale CorPack products and delivered its first commercial WEC hull. These developments are part of their ongoing efforts to secure type certification for larger projects, ensuring that their technology meets rigorous industry standards (source).
Working There
CorPower Ocean offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities across various departments, including engineering, marine operations, testing, and project development. The company actively recruits for roles in its Stockholm headquarters, as well as in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, where hull fabrication takes place. The culture at CorPower is characterized by a collaborative spirit, with a diverse team of specialists from 20 different countries working together to drive innovation in clean energy (source).
