Company Overview

Tibber

Førde, Norway

2016

Approximately 300 employees (source: mckinsey.com). No public revenue figures for 2023 or later are available.

What They Do

Tibber specializes in digital energy management technology, focusing on empowering consumers to control their energy usage rather than simply selling electricity for profit. The company offers a mobile app that serves as a smart assistant for purchasing green electricity at spot-market prices, providing real-time pricing visibility and consumption analytics powered by AI. This innovative approach allows users to optimize their energy consumption by shifting usage to off-peak hours when renewable energy is more abundant (source: tibber.com). Tibber's core products include automated controls for electric vehicles, heating systems, and home batteries, which help customers save on energy costs while contributing to grid stability.

Projects & Track Record

Tibber's flagship initiative is its virtual power plant (VPP), which coordinates flexible loads equivalent to powering hundreds of thousands of homes during peak demand. The VPP processes 137,000 MWh annually and has shifted 25,000 MWh for grid balancing since at least 2023 (source: tibber.com). A notable project, Norflex, was completed in 2020, where Tibber aggregated flexibility from panel heaters and EV chargers across multiple homes to enhance efficiency for local grid owner Agder Energi Nett in Norway. This project exemplifies Tibber's commitment to leveraging digital solutions for energy management rather than traditional infrastructure investments.

Recent Developments

In the last two years, Tibber has experienced significant growth, doubling its workforce to over 300 employees and expanding operations across four countries, serving nearly 500,000 customers monthly. The company aims to reach 10 million customers by 2025, as discussed in a McKinsey interview with CTO Richard Eklund (source: mckinsey.com). Tibber's VPP continues to demonstrate its effectiveness in processing and shifting energy for grid balancing, showcasing the company's innovative approach to energy management.

Working There

Tibber fosters a unique company culture that emphasizes autonomy and innovation, organizing employees into small, autonomous teams known as "squads." This structure allows for quick decision-making and encourages a sense of purpose among team members. The company actively hires across various roles, including engineering, product development, and technology, reflecting its multi-country operations (source: tibber.com). Tibber's culture is driven by shared values and a commitment to human-centric sustainability, leveraging technology to disrupt traditional energy markets.
