Senior Composite Engineer, Product Owner
CorPower Ocean
Company Overview
What They Do
CorPower Ocean specializes in the development of innovative wave energy converters (WECs), specifically focusing on point absorber devices that utilize a unique "WaveSpring" system. This technology, inspired by the human heart's pumping mechanism, allows for significantly enhanced energy capture, achieving five times more electricity per tonne of equipment compared to traditional methods. The company operates as a turnkey supplier, providing modular clusters of WECs, moorings, anchors, and floating collection hubs, alongside comprehensive project lifecycle services that include opportunity assessments, detailed engineering, and construction management (source).
Targeting utility-scale wave farms, CorPower aims to complement existing renewable energy sources like wind and solar, thereby contributing to a stable, carbon-free energy grid. Their technology is designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, featuring lightweight composite designs that reduce costs and enhance efficiency. The company’s commitment to rigorous testing and validation processes ensures that their products are ready for deployment in real-world conditions, setting them apart from legacy wave energy technologies that often struggle with inefficiency and durability (source).
Projects & Track Record
CorPower Ocean has made significant strides in the wave energy sector with notable projects such as the deployment of the C3 prototype at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, in 2018/2019. This project successfully demonstrated the performance and survivability of their technology. More recently, the company launched the commercial-scale C4 WEC in September 2023 in Aguçadoura, Portugal, which achieved a peak output of 600 kW and began exporting power to the Portuguese grid in October 2023 after a successful commissioning period (source).
Recent Developments
In the past two years, CorPower Ocean has achieved several key milestones, including the successful grid export of the C4 WEC and advancements in their COMPACT project, which focuses on developing lightweight composite prototypes for enhanced efficiency. The company has also unveiled industrial-scale CorPack products and delivered its first commercial WEC hull. These developments are part of their ongoing efforts to secure type certification for larger projects, ensuring that their technology meets rigorous industry standards (source).
Working There
CorPower Ocean offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities across various departments, including engineering, marine operations, testing, and project development. The company actively recruits for roles in its Stockholm headquarters, as well as in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, where hull fabrication takes place. The culture at CorPower is characterized by a collaborative spirit, with a diverse team of specialists from 20 different countries working together to drive innovation in clean energy (source).

Job Description
Working at CorPower Ocean you will be part of a world class team, determined to make big impact. We are on a mission to Power the Planet with clean electricity from ocean waves. We offer autonomy and flexibility, combined with personal responsibility. CorPower Ocean is a global leader in wave energy, with a technology that has shown game-changing performance. Your work will contribute to the global energy transition by unlocking one of the largest untapped sources of clean energy on earth. Since the start in 2012 CorPower has raised more than 115mEUR to take our wave energy technology to market, supporting a growing commercial project pipeline.
Role
As a Senior Composite Engineer - Product Owner, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of advanced composite structures for CorPower's pivotal Wave Energy Converters (WECs). You will provide technical leadership across the design, analysis, manufacturing, testing and certification of large and novel composite structures, critical to enabling the performance of the WEC. You will help set the direction for composite architectures, materials, processes and verification methods, and act as the go-to expert for complex composite structural challenges. The role is hands on and highly collaborative, working closely with composite manufacturing, Systems & Analysis, Integration & Testing, Supply Chain, and Marine Operations - aiming to deliver robust, cost-effective and environmentally responsible composite solutions at scale.
Technical Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end design and development of large, complex and highly loaded composite structures, from requirements and concept through detailed design, analysis, prototyping, qualification and production release.
- Lead and guide composite structural analysis, sizing for stability, strength and fatigue with hand calculations and FEA codes and ensure that the analysis and test plans are aligned and that validated models and results underpin critical decisions.
- Select materials, layups and processes (e.g., filament winding & VARI) to meet performance, reliability, manufacturability and cost targets.
- Produce and review engineering calculations, design & test reports, certification documentation and presentation materials for internal, external and regulatory audiences.
- Drive design-for-manufacture/assembly/service; provide clear feedback loops from assembly/testing/operations into design to continuously improve product robustness.
- Investigate and introduce new materials, architectures, processes and tools where they can improve performance, reliability, sustainability and cost.
- Ensure compliance with applicable composite design standards and certification pathways (e.g., DNV, IEC), including first-of-a-kind product certification.
- Support supply chain activities: component/specimen definition, supplier selection, manufacturing readiness, factory acceptance testing of modules.
- Own program plans for composite scope-requirements, schedules, budgets, risks-and deliver on-time, to performance and cost targets.
- Mentor and develop engineers and technicians; establish methods, tools and standards that can be replicated by Operations & Maintenance teams worldwide.
- Ensure safety-first culture; uphold industry, safety and environmental standards in design and operations; champion design-for-safety.
- Represent CorPower with customers, certification bodies and stakeholders on composite technologies, methods and decisions.
- Leadership of a cross-disciplinary product team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive product team environment, encouraging open communication, teamwork, and a "target-achievement-oriented" work culture.
Skills and Qualifications
- BSc/MSc/PhD in Mechanical/Structural Engineering or related discipline; 10+ years of relevant experience in composite design and analysis
- Deep proficiency in linear and non-linear analysis of composite structures using FEA tools (e.g. ANSYS, Abaqus, Altair Optistruct, Marc) over the full pipeline, from pre-processing to post-processing and critical analysis of results
- Deep understanding of composite materials and their characterisation
- Strong CAD/PLM literacy (e.g., Creo, Windchill) and data/documentation practices.
- Practical experience with composite manufacturing processes (e.g., filament winding & VARI) and associated quality controls.
- Experience with certification of first-of-a-kind products with bodies such as DNV; familiarity with relevant IEC/industry standards.
- Proven track record leading programs from specification and design through assembly, testing and deployment
- Excellent communication skills; comfortable presenting solutions internally and externally; highly proficient in English
As a person, you:
- are striving for excellence, put quality into everything you do
- are self-motivated and constantly seek the most efficient ways to work
- search for simple and sustainable solutions to difficult problems
- love to learn new things, and take pride in constantly developing your skills
