At TransAlta, we don't just generate electricity-we generate opportunity. As one of Canada's largest publicly traded power generators, we've been powering communities for over 100 years across Canada, the U.S., and Australia. Our diverse energy portfolio and passionate team are driving the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

We believe in the power of purpose, the strength of collaboration, and the value of continuous learning. If you're ready to make a real impact in a dynamic industry, you bring the energy - we'll provide the platform.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We have an exciting opportunity for a Trade Controls Analyst to join our Commodity Risk Management team. This position sits within TransAlta's Treasury and Risk Management business unit. At its core, the Risk team supports the essential "licence to trade" for our industry-leading commodity trade floor and asset optimization functions -a dynamic and highly respected operation that gives TransAlta a distinct competitive edge in the IPP sector.

As a mid-office function, the Risk team plays a critical role in supporting the Energy Trading & Marketing business. Within this team, the Trade Controls Analyst works cross-functionally with front, mid, and back-office teams-including traders, trading support roles, finance, settlements, and IT-to ensure secure and efficient trading operations. This role is responsible for managing access to both internal and external trading platforms and applications, as well as monitoring, analysing, and reporting on all aspects of trade controls to uphold compliance and operational integrity.

This role would suit someone highly organized and detail oriented who has a background in an administrative type role but also has a strong interest in developing an understanding of trading and gaining exposure to this unique area of our business.

This role is based out of our office in Calgary head office. This is a full-time, office-based role with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

  • Configure, monitor, and manage employee access to segregated functions within internal trading systems
  • Responsible for a high level of sensitive access and information - must have a proven track record of strong attention to detail

  • Investigate and report on segregation of duty violations among Front, Mid, and Back-office functions
  • Work with internal and external audit on trading control related 'walk-throughs' and control evidence requests
  • Opportunity to learn and improve established processes, systems and structures

ABOUT YOU

  • University Degree or College Diploma
  • 3+ work experience, preferably in a trading controls environment working with tradable commodities and associated systems
  • Knowledge of independent system operator (ISO) client portals and experience working with Energy Trading and Risk Management systems (ETRMS), would be an asset

  • Proactive and analytical mind set with the demonstrated ability to work independently on tasks and projects. Willingness to take initiative and collaborate with peers and management to drive process and system improvements
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills. Database and PowerBI skills would be an asset

THE PERKS

  • Competitive salary
  • Annual and long-term incentives available for select roles
  • Company-matching pension plan
  • Flexible health benefits for you and your family
  • Generous vacation and personal days
