Senior Control Engineer
Kitepower
Company Overview
Kitepower (Enevate B.V.)
Delft, Netherlands
2016
Approximately 40 employees (source: rocketreach.co). No confirmed revenue data for 2023+, but a projection of over €800,000 for 2025 (source: fundernation.eu).
What They Do
Kitepower is an innovative Dutch startup focused on airborne wind energy systems. The company utilizes large, controllable kites tethered to ground-based generators. These kites fly in a figure-eight pattern at altitudes of up to 350 meters to harness stronger winds at higher elevations (source: thekitepower.com). Their flagship product is the containerized 100 kW Falcon system, developed from a 20 kW prototype. This system is designed for rapid deployment and can be rented, making it appealing for temporary energy needs in construction and other sectors (source: thekitepower.com). Target markets include construction, remote locations, and military applications, employing a model for energy as a service (source: thekitepower.com).
Projects & Track Record
Kitepower has completed several notable projects, including the deployment of the 100 kW Falcon system during a military exercise in 2021 in Aruba, marking the first test outside of Europe (source: defencefinancemonitor.substack.com). Currently, the company is involved in a long-term campaign at the AWE test site of RWE Renewables in Bangor Erris, Mayo, Ireland, where they are working on developing autonomous flight capabilities (source: awetrain.eu). Additionally, six commercial agreements have been signed for the rental of their systems, with another fourteen in the pipeline, highlighting the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions (source: tudelft.nl).
Recent Developments
In the past two years, Kitepower has announced a rental strategy aimed at early European customers, with expected revenue of over €800,000 in 2025 from a fleet of 20 units (source: thekitepower.com). They have also launched operations in Ireland in collaboration with RWE, expanding their geographical presence (source: fundernation.eu). Furthermore, while no mergers or acquisitions have been reported, the company has recently attracted impact investments building on previous funding from Horizon 2020 and YES!Delft (source: cbinsights.com).
Careers at Kitepower
Kitepower offers a range of positions at their headquarters in Delft, including roles in Software, Hardware, Operations, and Sales, as well as Research and legal positions (source: fundernation.eu). The company culture focuses on agile development with quarterly goals and bi-weekly cycles, contributing to a dynamic work environment (source: yesdelft.com). All job openings are based in Delft, with no mention of remote work or other locations (source: rocketreach.co).

Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Control Engineer who will design, implement, and refine the real-time control algorithms that govern the flight behaviour of our kite. You will work at the core of our technology, developing control software that ensures stable, efficient, and safe kite operation under dynamic and unpredictable atmospheric conditions.
This role bridges theory and practice: you will translate models and algorithms into reliable real-time software and deploy them into real flight hardware. Your work directly influences flight performance, energy yield, and the overall safety of the system.
What you will be doing
- Control algorithm development
- Design, implement, and improve flight-control algorithms in C++
- Develop in different types of control systems like PID, H-infinity and Model Predictive Control
- Develop robust state machines, feedback controllers, estimators, and guidance logic
- Optimize controller performance for varying wind conditions and flight phases
- Integrate system identification results and refine controllers from real data
- Real-time implementation and testing
- Deploy control algorithms on embedded and real-time hardware
- Ensure deterministic execution, stability, and safety of all control operations
- Validate and tune controllers using simulation tools and field testing
- Flight dynamics and system understanding
- Analyze kite flight behavior, trajectories, and control responses
- Interpret sensor and telemetry data to improve models and controller performance
- Integration and cross-team cooperation
- Work closely with simulation engineers to validate new control strategies
- Collaborate with production software engineers to ensure seamless integration of controllers with the energy production logic and ground station interfaces
- Tools & Technologies
- C++ (required), Python for analysis, prototyping, and tuning
- Control theory, flight dynamics, nonlinear control, state estimation
- Real-time systems, embedded platform
Your profile
We are looking for a candidate with strong practical experience in developing and implementing control algorithms for complex dynamic systems. The candidate should combine excellent programming skills with a deep understanding of control dynamics.
Ideal background includes:
- Master's or PhD in Control Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
- 5+ years of experience developing control systems for real-world platforms for instance drones, robotics, mechatronics, aerospace, automotive, etc
- Experience with control for (airborne) wind energy and tuning of controllers
- Hands-on experience with real-time embedded systems
Why us?
At Kitepower, we believe that changing the world should be an exciting and rewarding journey. We invest in our team members' growth and well-being, offering a package that includes:
