What They Do

The Climate Reality Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to climate change education, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization rather than deploying renewable energy technologies like solar or wind. Founded through the consolidation of the Alliance for Climate Protection and The Climate Project, both initiated by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, the organization has evolved significantly since its inception. It focuses on promoting clean energy transitions through training and campaigns, mobilizing a global network of over 3.8 million activists, and providing tools such as Al Gore's updated slideshows for public presentations (source: climaterealityproject.org). The organization’s primary activities include Climate Reality Leadership Trainings and events like 24 Hours of Reality, which aim to engage diverse societal segments, including grassroots activists and policymakers worldwide (source: climaterealityproject.org). Its mission is centered around three pillars: reducing emissions by opposing fossil fuels, financing just transitions, especially in the Global South, and strengthening international agreements like the Paris Agreement at COP summits (source: algore.com).

Projects & Track Record

Notable projects by The Climate Reality Project focus on training and advocacy rather than energy infrastructure. The Climate Reality Leadership Trainings have certified tens of thousands of individuals globally, including virtual sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic that attracted over 10,000 participants (source: ecologistics.org). The inaugural Power Up training, held in Houston, Texas, in October 2022, targeted activists from various states to counter petrochemical expansion in regions known as "Cancer Alley" and the "Cancer Belt" (source: climaterealityproject.org). Ongoing initiatives include the REALITY® Tour tied to COP 30 in Brazil, which aims to build political will, and campaigns that hold the U.S. Congress accountable for clean energy incentives (source: climaterealityproject.org). The organization has also expanded its regional organizing efforts in West Virginia, mobilizing local chapters to combat fossil fuel reliance (source: wvecouncil.org).

Recent Developments

In the last two years, The Climate Reality Project has made significant strides, including the launch of the Power Up training in August 2022, which aims to empower activists in their climate advocacy efforts (source: climaterealityproject.org). The organization has also expanded its presence in West Virginia, focusing on regional organizing against fossil fuels and enhancing its grassroots mobilization efforts (source: wvecouncil.org). While there have been no reported acquisitions or mergers, The Climate Reality Project continues to maintain its registration in various states for solicitation purposes, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and accountability (source: climaterealityproject.org). The organization has also been actively involved in COP-related advocacy, working to grow its network and influence in climate policy discussions (source: climaterealityproject.org).

Working There

Job opportunities at The Climate Reality Project emphasize advocacy and organizing roles, such as the Regional Organizer position in West Virginia, which focuses on mobilizing climate action in the region (source: greenjobs.greenjobsearch.org). The organization likely has departments dedicated to training, campaigns, digital communications, and grassroots mobilization, although specific roles beyond organizing are not detailed. The company culture is characterized by values of inclusivity, equity, and justice in climate solutions, fostering a diverse global network of advocates, scientists, and storytellers (source: climaterealityproject.org). While documented benefits are limited, donations to the organization may be tax-deductible, and financial reports are available upon request (source: climaterealityproject.org).

The Climate Reality Project was founded by former US Vice President Al Gore with a mission to catalyze a global solution to the climate crisis by making urgent action a necessity across every sector of society. We recruit, train, and mobilize people of all walks of life to work for just climate solutions that speed energy transition worldwide and open the door to a better tomorrow for us all.

Our global network totals more than 4.5 million people from more than 190 countries and territories. With 11 branches around the world, we support our trained Climate Reality Leaders and network. Our strategy is two-pronged: 1) grow the climate movement and build the political will necessary to adopt policy solutions through our signature trainings around the globe, and 2) harness our ever-expanding network in support of three key impact areas: reducing emissions, financing a just transition and promoting global climate leadership.

Climate Reality staff are a diverse group of passionate individuals who've come together to tackle the greatest challenge of our time. We are advocates, organizers, storytellers, and non-profit professionals committed to building a sustainable future together.
