What They Do
Twelve operates in the carbon transformation and chemical technology sector, focusing on converting CO₂ into profitable chemicals and fuels. The company describes its technology as "industrial photosynthesis" (source: twelve.co). Unlike traditional renewable energy companies focused on generation or storage, Twelve's business model centers on capturing emissions and chemically transforming them into useful products. Their breakthrough technology utilizes polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis to convert CO₂ and water into valuable chemical building blocks (source: twelve.co). This innovative approach allows them to produce a range of products, including sustainable aviation fuel and various chemical feedstocks, thereby addressing the urgent need for sustainable solutions in multiple industries.
Projects & Track Record
Twelve has established significant partnerships and projects that highlight its market traction and innovative capabilities. Notably, in February 2020, Twelve collaborated with Mercedes-Benz and Trinseo to create the world's first C-pillar made with polycarbonate derived from CO₂ electrolysis (source: twelve.co). Additionally, in March 2021, they partnered with Procter & Gamble to produce carbon-negative ingredients for Tide detergent (source: twelve.co). Their technology has also been applied in the aviation sector, with partnerships involving Alaska Airlines and the U.S. Air Force for sustainable aviation fuel applications (source: twelve.co). These collaborations underscore Twelve's commitment to transforming CO₂ emissions into valuable products across various industries.
Recent Developments
In June 2022, Twelve announced a significant $130 million Series B funding round, which was led by DCVC and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (source: twelve.co). This funding is intended to support the company's plans to build an industrial-scale carbon transformation platform, allowing them to deploy their reactor systems at partnered manufacturing locations (source: twelve.co). More recently, in May 2023, Twelve partnered with Emerging Fuels Technology to further develop sustainable aviation fuel (source: twelve.co). This ongoing expansion and collaboration reflect the growing confidence in Twelve's technology and its potential to significantly impact the market.
Working There
Twelve operates as a science and engineering company with roles spanning research and development, operations, environmental health and safety (EH&S), product ecosystem management, and business development. Recent job postings indicate active hiring in Moses Lake, Washington, and Berkeley, California (source: jobs.ashbyhq.com). The company prides itself on being mission-driven, focusing on creating a "fossil-free future" and addressing climate change through innovative chemistry (source: twelve.co). While specific benefits documentation is not available, the company's access to world-class resources and purpose-built R&D facilities suggests a strong commitment to employee development and a supportive work environment.

Job Description
Twelve is pioneering a new industrial era with carbon transformation. We use electrochemistry to turn CO2 into critical products-fuels, chemicals, and materials-that today rely on fossil fuels. Our mission: to fundamentally change how the world makes its essential goods by transforming CO2 from a liability into a resource, building resilient, fossil-free supply chains, and advancing next-generation industry.
We would like this to be your dream job. Many of us start in engineering work, hoping to get to invent things and build them in a creative environment, surrounded by people who are doing the same. While many careers turn into an endless slog of specifications and detail optimization, we are doing that inventive work of our dreams and that work is especially rewarding because it is work that the world needs.
This position is on a small team that primarily supports our test stations. These stations (at multiple scales) are custom devices managing gas, liquid, temperature, and current for our electrochemical cells. Modification of test equipment to suit a particular scientific purpose is a normal part of our operation. In this position, you will work with electrochemists, materials engineers, operations staff, and your fellow equipment/mechanical engineers to determine the best path forward to reach a particular goal. Then, you'll execute projects that vary from a few days of sourcing and assembly to projects that require months of design, work with multiple vendors and outside fabricators, and install coordination with internal partners. We aim to work proportionally and elegantly to build the right tool for the job of the moment.
What you will do
- Design and build equipment to support the development of our electrolyzer technology
- Lead projects of different sizes based on tactical needs of the moment
- Learn and teach and share constantly
- Assist with service, maintenance, and troubleshooting for existing equipment
- Identify opportunities and provide technical input to guide strategic decisions
- Collaborate as part of a multi-disciplinary team to do things that have never been done before
Who you are
- The ability to work safely and take responsibility for the safety of others in an environment with multiple hazard types
- Some kind of engineer with substantial hardware experience in multiple arenas
- You have breadth and depth in your understanding of mechanical systems, including several of the following: pumps, fluids, high pressure gasses, fixturing, temperature control, high current switching, valves, seals, motion control, hydraulics or pneumatics, flow measurement and control, metrology
- Experience with designing and troubleshooting electromechanical systems
- Experience with sensor specification, selection, and integration
- Familiarity with a broad range of fabrication methods and significant hands-on experience and comfort in some methods. (we have a shop and you should use it)
- Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to drive consensus and understanding across a broad range of audiences.
- Comfort with experimental work and interpreting data
Twelve Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Paid sick days and vacation
