The Power Systems Engineer is responsible for performing advanced power system analyses and simulations, including power flow, stability, EMT, and real-time studies, to support the integration of Smart Wires' technologies within electrical transmission networks. This role requires proficiency in industry-standard tools such as PSLF, PSS/e, PowerWorld, or PSCAD, as well as basic programming skills (e.g., Python) to support model and automation development. The position works closely with global Smart Wires teams, external stakeholders, and customers to validate models, identify new applications, and support product improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate has 4-5 years of hands-on power systems experience, strong documentation skills, and thrives in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Create reproducible power-flow, steady-state, dynamic, and EMT studies, and real-time simulations.
- Contribute to the integration of Smart Wires' products into the planning and operations of electrical systems via tool and model development.
- Conduct testing and validation of models and applications to ensure high quality and reliable performance.
- Identify new applications for Smart Wires' technology via customer engagement and participation in regional and regulatory processes and work with the sales team to realize these applications.
- Collaborate with the product development team to improve existing products and develop new products.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, with an emphasis in Power Systems.
- 4-5 years of experience in power systems, with demonstrated ability to execute a variety of studies (e.g., power flow, stability, short circuit, protection coordination, EMT studies), and flexibility to take on new types of analysis as needed.
- Proficiency in at least one industry-standard power systems analysis tool for load flow, dynamic analysis, and/or EMT studies (e.g., PSLF, PSS/e, PowerWorld, PSCAD, ATP).
- Basic programming skills in at least one high-level language (e.g., Python or C); experience with version control tools such as Git is a plus.
- Ability to write clear and concise documentation, including user manuals and technical specifications.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive, self-motivated attitude and willingness to take initiative.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within technical teams across multiple continents and diverse backgrounds.
- Highly organized and detail oriented.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with model and automation development within power systems.
- Experience with EMT (Electromagnetic Transient) analysis, including simulation and interpretation of transient phenomena in power systems.
- Experience with protection coordination studies, including relay settings, coordination curves, and fault analysis.
- Some experience with real-time digital simulation platforms (e.g., RTDS) is desirable.
