Intern Energy Transition and Technology Scouting
RWE Clean Energy
Company Overview
What They Do
RWE Clean Energy focuses primarily on onshore wind, utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV), and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The company is involved in energy trading, project development, construction, and operations across the Americas, providing comprehensive renewable energy solutions. Their services include greenfield development of wind and solar farms, utility-scale PV design and engineering, BESS integration for grid stability, and civil engineering for site preparation. RWE Clean Energy targets utility-scale power purchase agreement (PPA) customers, corporate off-takers, and grid operators, emphasizing fast-to-market projects that support American energy independence through domestic manufacturing and LNG offtake (source: rwe.com). With a coast-to-coast presence in most states, RWE Clean Energy ranks as the No. 3 U.S. solar developer and No. 2 in U.S. onshore wind/solar broadly, showcasing a massive 24+ GW U.S. pipeline and an integrated trading platform for asset optimization.
Projects & Track Record
RWE Clean Energy boasts over 10 GW of operational U.S. assets as of 2023, including wind, solar, and battery projects developed over 15+ years. The March 2023 acquisition of Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses significantly enhanced their portfolio, adding 3.1 GW of mostly solar generation and a 7 GW development pipeline. Notable projects include the world's largest offshore wind farm off the British coast and Germany's first large-scale wind plant in the 1980s. Recent U.S. commissions of new wind and solar farms have contributed to 2023 earnings, with ongoing major projects aimed at expanding the U.S. pipeline beyond 24 GW, including battery storage solutions and hydrogen electrolysers globally (source: rwe.com). Key clients include U.S. utilities and corporates via PPAs, with partnerships like the Con Edison integration, and the company is actively expanding its geographical footprint across Europe, North America, and APAC.
Recent Developments
In the last two years, RWE Clean Energy has made significant strides, including the acquisition of Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses in March 2023, which instantly boosted their U.S. solar leadership. This acquisition added 3.1 GW capacity and a 7 GW pipeline, alongside commissioning multiple new U.S. wind and solar farms that lifted 2023 adjusted EBITDA by €2 billion to €8.4 billion. April 2023 marked RWE AG's 125th anniversary, during which the company launched the €125 million RWE Foundation for social projects and reaffirmed its commitment to renewable energy leadership. Additionally, the November 2023 Capital Markets Day raised green capacity targets to over 65 GW by 2030, with adjusted EBITDA projected to exceed €9 billion (source: rwe.com). Milestones include ranking No. 2 globally in offshore wind and No. 2 in U.S. solar, operationalizing 35.5 GW green capacity group-wide by the end of 2023.

For over 125 years, RWE has been reliably supplying electricity. Our team of around 20,000 people is shaping the energy world of tomorrow. Today, RWE is one of the world's leading renewable energy companies. With our growth strategy we are setting the pace and investing billions of euros every year - above all in the expansion of offshore and onshore wind, solar energy and battery storage. Our diverse portfolio is perfectly complemented by our global energy trading business.
