Their technology portfolio includes hybrid systems that integrate wind, solar, battery storage, and other advanced energy solutions, allowing them to provide comprehensive electricity generation services for the Tasmanian grid. Projects & Track Record
Hydro Tasmania has a rich history of notable projects, including the foundational Waddamana Power Station, which began operations in 1916. Other significant projects include the Duck Reach power station, Lake Margaret, and the Tribute Power Station, which was established in 1994 to honor the company's workers. More recently, the Flinders Island Hydro Energy Hub was commissioned in 2017, featuring a combination of wind, solar, and battery storage technologies that achieved over 2,000 hours of 100% renewable operation. Ongoing projects include the Tarraleah Hydro Scheme redevelopment, which aims to double its capacity, and a major solar farm purchase agreement that will enhance Tasmania's renewable energy generation capabilities (source: wikipedia.org).
Recent Developments
In the past two years, Hydro Tasmania has launched a renewable energy offtake tender aimed at integrating wind and solar projects to deliver up to 1,500 GWh/year, which is crucial for maintaining grid reliability amid increasing demand. Additionally, they secured a power purchase agreement for the 288 MW Northern Midlands solar farm in early 2024. The company is also actively supporting Tasmania's Green Hydrogen Hub initiative, which aims to enhance hydrogen production capabilities through firming from their hydro assets (source: power-technology.com).
Working There
Hydro Tasmania offers a variety of roles across its operations, including positions in generation, engineering, IT, and construction. The company is focused on expanding its workforce to support ongoing projects such as the Tarraleah redevelopment and hybrid energy integration initiatives. Hiring primarily occurs from their Hobart headquarters and statewide power stations, with a strong emphasis on community and long-term commitment to Tasmania's energy security. The culture at Hydro Tasmania is deeply rooted in its history, with many employees coming from multi-generational hydro families, fostering a sense of belonging and dedication to the region (source: hydro.com.au).
