HDF Energy

Company Overview

HDF Energy (formerly Hydrogen of France)

Blanquefort, France

2012

Approximately 60 employees in 2022 (source: hdf-energy.com). Forecast to exceed 500 employees by 2030. Revenues of €3.46 million in 2022 (source: hdf-energy.com).

What They Do

HDF Energy specializes in high-power hydrogen fuel cell technology, utilizing proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology. Their flagship product, the Renewstable® plants, allows for the storage of intermittent renewable energy in the form of hydrogen, ensuring non-intermittent electricity production 24/7. The production units range from 1 to 10 MW, offering high power density and efficiency exceeding 50% (source: clean-energy-islands.ec.europa.eu). HDF Energy targets various markets, including energy grids, marine propulsion, and industrial applications, with clients such as governments and refineries like SARA (source: hdf-energy.com).

Projects & Achievements

Among notable projects, the Cleargen project in Martinique, which was commissioned in 2019, is the world's first high-power hydrogen fuel cell installation, producing electricity from hydrogen byproduct from the SARA refinery (source: ritzau.dk). The CEOG project in French Guiana, currently under construction, is the world's first multi-MW hydrogen production park, designed to power 10,000 homes through massive renewable hydrogen storage (source: hdf-energy.com). Other advanced projects include Los Cabos in Mexico and RSB in Barbados, part of an international pipeline in Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific (source: clean-energy-islands.ec.europa.eu).

Recent Developments

In February 2023, HDF Energy laid the foundation stone for its 7,000 m² gigafactory in Blanquefort, which will be the world's first factory dedicated to the mass production of multi-MW hydrogen fuel cells, with an annual capacity of 50 MW expected to reach 1 GW by 2030 (source: hydrogeneurope.eu). In April 2023, the company announced financial results for 2022, with 751 MW in development and ongoing government partnerships with Indonesia and Zimbabwe (source: hdf-energy.com). The gigafactory is a key element of HDF's reindustrialization strategy, aimed at creating local jobs and supporting exports (source: clean-energy-islands.ec.europa.eu).

Job Description

Founded in 2012, HDF Energy is a leading global player in the hydrogen sector, with two main activities. As an industrial company, HDF designs and manufactures high-power fuel cells at its factory in Blanquefort, near Bordeaux. These cutting-edge technologies produce electricity from hydrogen, with the aim of decarbonising power generation for public electricity grids, as well as heavy maritime and rail mobility. As a hydrogen infrastructure architect, HDF Energy designs and develops large turnkey hydrogen infrastructures to produce low-carbon hydrogen and clean electricity. Through dedicated project companies, we also finance, build and operate these facilities.

Our flagship model is the Renewstable??, a multi-megawatt power plant delivering non-intermittent renewable, stable and baseload power, 24/7, by seamlessly integrating intermittent renewable energy sources (solar or wind) with substantial on-site energy storage in the form of green hydrogen. These plants are being developed in more than twenty countries around the world.

Backed by a team of over 100+ hydrogen experts boasting more than a decade of operational experience across the value chain, HDF Energy is currently developing a portfolio of advanced projects valued at over ???2 billion.

Headquartered in France, HDF Energy has regional offices in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region with 35+ nationalities among its staff. Since 2021, the Group has been listed on the Euronext Paris stock market.
