Their Business

EcoCeres is a company focused on biomass utilization, initially incubated by Towngas in Hong Kong and established in 2008. The company has evolved from waste-to-energy solutions to the production of renewable fuels, particularly advanced biorefining technologies that can convert 100% waste-based feedstocks (such as used cooking oil and agricultural residues) into biofuels, chemicals, and materials (source: fintechmagazine.com). EcoCeres' core technologies include advanced water treatment and biorefining platforms, especially Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA-SPK) technology, which can achieve up to 90% lifecycle greenhouse gas reductions compared to fossil fuels (source: eco-ceres.com). Their products include Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), renewable naphtha, and Cellulosic Ethanol (CE), all produced together in integrated facilities, with feedstocks sourced from used cooking oil, animal fats, and agricultural waste (source: eco-ceres.com).

Projects and Achievements

Notable projects by EcoCeres include the world's first ISCC-CORSIA Plus certified SAF plant located in Jiangsu, China, and a new renewable fuel complex in Johor, Malaysia, which is expected to add 420,000 tons of SAF and HVO annual capacity by the end of 2025 (source: cwrrr.org). Additionally, EcoCeres is expanding its SAF center in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), establishing a local feedstock-to-production chain, including plans to deliver the first locally sourced SAF by 2025, which is expected to save emissions equivalent to 10,000 round trips between Hong Kong and London (source: cwrrr.org). Major clients and partners include Cathay Pacific and HSBC, participating in Hong Kong's first SAF ecosystem pilot (source: eco-ceres.com).

Recent Developments

In the past two years, EcoCeres announced a tripartite partnership with HSBC and Cathay Pacific, along with the Hong Kong Investment Company (HKIC), to promote Hong Kong's first SAF ecosystem, enhancing traceability in the travel supply chain and supporting decarbonization in the Greater Bay Area (source: eco-ceres.com). Additionally, the company signed a long-term supply agreement for used cooking oil with Shenzhen Expressway Environmental Company to support the production of HVO and SAF, promoting a circular economy model (source: advancedbiofuelsusa.info). In terms of financing, EcoCeres completed a Series B funding round totaling $508 million, with major investors including Bain Capital, Kerogen Capital, and Towngas (source: cbinsights.com).

Work Environment

EcoCeres offers a variety of positions, including operations, technical research and innovation, human resources, finance, legal counsel, and executive leadership. The management team includes CEO Matti Lievonen, Executive Vice President of Operations Dannis Poon, and CFO Paul Cheung, reflecting recruitment needs in technology, operations, legal, and support functions (source: eco-ceres.com). Major recruitment activities are focused at the headquarters in Hong Kong, with more opportunities likely to arise as facilities expand in Malaysia and China (source: craft.co). The company culture emphasizes core values of integrity, safety, innovation, responsibility, and teamwork, reflected in its "Purely Born" renewable platform philosophy, which focuses on partnerships and ESG-driven growth (source: eco-ceres.com).
