Job Description
The Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) department is dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of all employees, contractors, and visitors across every project and site. They develop, implement, and monitor safety policies, risk assessments, and compliance with legal and industry standards. By fostering a strong safety culture and promoting environmental responsibility, the HSE team plays a critical role in protecting people, reducing incidents, and supporting sustainable business practices throughout Alternative Heat.
Role Overview
With projected growth, we are seeking a proactive HSE Officer to grow with the business to manage all health, safety, and environmental aspects across these projects, to ensure compliance, reduce risk, and promote a culture of safety & wellbeing throughout our operations.
The HSE Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety and environmental programs to ensure a safe and compliant workplaces. This role involves monitoring regulatory compliance, minimizing workplace hazards, promoting a culture of safety, and ensuring environmental standards are met or exceeded.
The candidate will collaborate closely with their line manager and our in-house teams, throughout client engagement and all stages of decarbonisation projects, underfloor heating projects & maintenance/service contracts as they grow to develop and deliver effective HSE management arrangements. These arrangements will ensure compliance with both client-specific and legal requirements, guaranteeing the safe delivery of on-site projects and maintenance programs.
Beyond maintaining existing standards, the candidate will be expected to drive continuous improvement through both established best practices and innovative approaches, with a strong emphasis on behavioral safety.
Leading by example to cultivate a strong safety culture across decarbonization/maintenance & servicing projects, inspiring commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.
The HSE Officer will establish strong relationships through regular site visits, providing dedicated support and expert guidance on all HSE matters.
Reporting to the HSE Manager (Decarbonization Project), the HSE Officer will work closely with project delivery teams, client representatives, and the wider HSE department to ensure a safe, compliant, and sustainable operating environment within this rapidly growing sector.
What You'll be Doing
The ideal candidate will bring extensive industry experience across construction, infrastructure, major projects, decarbonisation, energy transition, or renewable energy sectors, including technologies such as heat pumps, district heat networks, retrofits, insulation programmes, and solar or battery installations. They will have strong knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations in the UK and ROI, including client and principal contractor responsibilities, alongside proven experience supporting contractors and subcontractors with CDM duties. The successful candidate will be highly skilled in conducting site audits, incident investigations, risk assessments, and compliance monitoring within live construction environments, while working collaboratively with project teams throughout all project phases. They will demonstrate excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to influence teams at all levels and foster a proactive, positive safety culture. In addition, they will work closely with senior leadership, clients, and remote teams to ensure health, safety, and environmental considerations are fully integrated into operational planning and project delivery across the entire project lifecycle.
