What They Do

Verkor is a private French battery manufacturer specializing in the production of low-carbon lithium-ion battery cells optimized for electric mobility and stationary storage. The company focuses on innovative technologies that ensure high power, high energy density, fast charging, as well as durability and robustness in extreme temperatures. These innovations are validated at their Verkor Innovation Centre (VIC) in Grenoble, which serves as a R&D lab and pilot line (source: verkor.com). Verkor produces flexible cells for various segments, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and stationary energy storage systems, with a particular emphasis on long-term efficiency for surplus renewable energy.

Projects and Background

Currently, Verkor's flagship project is the gigafactory in Bourbourg, near the port of Dunkirk, which has an initial capacity of 16 GWh per year, capable of producing batteries for approximately 300,000 vehicles. This site, inaugurated on December 11 and 12, 2025, is expected to reach a capacity of 50 GWh by 2030, with a total estimated cost between 2 and 3 billion euros (source: verkor.com). Although full production has not yet been achieved, the VIC in Grenoble has already begun producing cells and modules, transferring these initial products to the gigafactory for assembly. Key customers include Renault Group, with a contract for 12 GWh per year starting in 2025, and EDF, which has signed a 33 MW nuclear power allocation contract.

Recent Developments

Over the past two years, Verkor has secured Series C funding exceeding 2 billion euros for its gigafactory, as well as a green loan of 1.3 billion euros from 19 banks. The opening of the Bourbourg gigafactory marked a decisive milestone, with the first battery production scheduled for 2026. Additionally, a 12-year contract with EDF was signed on December 3, 2025, to provide low-carbon nuclear energy, further strengthening Verkor's position in the sustainable energy sector (source: verkor.com). These developments are part of a broader strategy aimed at establishing European sovereignty in battery production.

Working at Verkor

Verkor is recruiting experts in energy, automotive, mobility, as well as technicians and engineers specialized in battery design and manufacturing. Positions are primarily based in Grenoble and Bourbourg, with a projection of 1,200 direct jobs at full capacity, and up to 2,000 indirect jobs by 2030 (source: verkor.com). The company culture emphasizes commitment, communication, and teamwork, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment, surrounded by the mountains of Grenoble, which was designated the European Green Capital in 2022.

As a Battery Pack Architect, you are responsible for defining the overall system architecture and ensuring the technical coherence and performance of the battery pack. You drive key design decisions by balancing electrochemical, electrical, thermal, mechanical, and safety constraints to deliver a solution that is safe, high-performing, manufacturable, and cost-effective.

You act as a cross-functional technical leader and the main guarantor of the system-level vision.

Main responsibilities

1. System Architecture Definition

  • Define the overall battery pack architecture, including:
    • Electrical topology (series/parallel configuration, HV/LV interfaces)
    • Mechanical concept (modules integration, pack integration, pack enclosure design)
    • Busbar routing
    • Thermal architecture
  • Ensure consistency between cells, BMS, power electronics, and system-level requirements
  • Drive architectural trade-offs considering performance, cost, risk, manufacturability (ergonomic, value chain, process flow chart) and industrial constraints (existing means compatibility)

2. Requirements & Performance Management

  • Define and cascade system requirements
  • In charge of design justification document as well as its integration into PLM
  • Ensure requirements traceability across the system
  • Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the battery pack

3. Multi-Domain System Integration

  • Ensure proper integration of all subsystems:
    • Cells
    • BMS
    • Thermal system
    • High-voltage components (contactors, fuses, etc.)
  • Manage critical interfaces (electrical, thermal, mechanical, communication)
  • Guarantee system behavior under all operating conditions (normal and fault cases)

4. Safety & Compliance

  • Integrate safety constraints from early design stages:
    • Define mitigation strategies (detection, isolation, protection mechanisms)
    • Ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations

5. Technical Leadership & Risk Management

  • Identify and manage technical risks across the system
  • Drive key trade-offs (cost vs performance vs safety)
  • Lead architecture and design reviews
  • Support high-level product and technical decisions

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in battery system architecture, with at least 5 years owning system architecture on complete pack programs.
  • An experience with EV OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, or pack integrators is preferred.
  • Proven greenfield program experience (building a product from scratch).
  • Fluent English mandatory.
  • Willingness to travel to customers and suppliers internationally.
  • Knowledge of applicable standards: IEC 62619, UN 38.3, GB38031, ECE R100, ISO 26262 fundamentals.
  • Required management tools: DOORS, Polarion, or Jama. JIRA or an equivalent for project tracking.
  • Proven knowledge in high-voltage battery pack design and development and battery pack mechanical design
  • Good understanding in battery pack main characteristics sizing, thermal management, and system-level validation (components to full battery pack)
  • Familiarity with the simulation approach and DFMEA
  • Functional safety fundamentals (HARA, ASIL allocation)
  • Knowledge of CATIA V5/SolidWorks (system & electrical layout), and MATLAB/Simulink (pack performance simulation)
