Job Description

Targray is looking for a commercially minded lawyer to join our legal team at our Montreal head office.

This is a hands-on, business-facing role for someone who enjoys contracts, negotiation, problem-solving, and working closely with traders and business teams. Based near our trading floor, you will support commercial transactions across Targray's renewables, energy transition, and commodity businesses. Experience in the energy industry or related sectors is considered an asset but is not required. We are looking for a strong contracts lawyer who is curious, practical, and eager to develop expertise in renewable fuels, environmental markets, sustainability, and global commodities trading. The successful candidate will work closely with Targray's traders, business development teams, finance, risk, operations, and legal colleagues, and will report to our Director of Legal- Energy & Environmental Markets.

This role is based at our Kirkland, Montreal head office and requires in-office attendance four days per week, with Tuesdays and Thursdays being mandatory in-office days.

Responsibilities

You will draft, review, negotiate, and improve a wide range of commercial agreements for Targray's trading and renewable energy businesses, taking ownership of certain matters while collaborating closely with the Director of Legal.

Your work will include:

  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, including purchase, sale, supply, offtake, trading, logistics, and services agreements.
  • Working directly with traders and business teams to understand deals and turn commercial ideas into clear, practical contracts.
  • Helping build new templates, contract frameworks, playbooks, and clauses for emerging markets.
  • Supporting transactions in renewable fuels, environmental commodities, biofuels, feedstocks, and other energy transition products.
  • Advising on practical legal and commercial risk in a fast-paced business environment.
  • Collaborating with legal, finance, risk, operations, and senior leadership on contract strategy and execution.
  • Learning new markets and helping create legal structures for products and transactions that may not yet have standard forms.

Requirements

  • Law degree and membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial law society.
  • 5+ years of legal experience, ideally with meaningful commercial contract drafting and negotiation experience.
  • Strong drafting skills and a genuine interest in creating clear, practical, business-focused contracts.
  • Experience with commercial agreements, supply agreements, distribution agreements, procurement, services, logistics, technology, corporate/commercial work, or related business contracts.
  • Good judgment and the ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written English skills, given Targray's international counterparties and business outside Quebec.
  • An interest in sustainability, renewable energy, commodities, or emerging markets.
  • Strong commercial judgment, practical problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and comfort working closely with business stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively, and build strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Must be based in the Greater Montreal area and legally authorized to work in Canada.

Assets

  • Experience in commodities, trading, renewable fuels, energy, environmental markets, or regulated industries is considered an asset.
  • French language skills are considered an asset.
