What They Do
Reactive Technologies is a pioneering private grid resilience technology company that specializes in developing innovative solutions for measuring power grid inertia and system strength in real-time. Founded in 2010 by Marc Borrett and a team of telecom engineers, the company shifted its focus from semiconductor projects to energy grid measurement after identifying significant stability issues during a 2009 experiment. Their core technology, known as grid-enhancing technologies (GETs), addresses the challenges posed by integrating inverter-based renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into existing transmission and distribution grids (source: frontlines.io). Reactive Technologies does not engage directly in energy generation but instead provides critical insights that enable better planning and optimization of distributed energy resources (DERs).
Projects & Track Record
Reactive Technologies has successfully completed several notable projects, including a national-scale deployment with the UK's National Energy System Operator (NESO). This six-year commercial service provides real-time inertia visibility, enabling significant CO2 savings and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources to meet NESO's 2035 net-zero goal (source: reactive-technologies.com). Other deployments have taken place in countries such as Japan, Germany, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand, showcasing the company's ability to scale its solutions from small pilots to national implementations. Ongoing projects include a five-year initiative with Taiwan Power Company to enhance grid stability amid a new energy storage rollout and a collaboration with Japan's HEPCO to assess inertia in the face of increasing renewable energy variability (source: prnewswire.com).
Recent Developments
In the past two years, Reactive Technologies has made significant strides in expanding its operations, particularly into North America, with the establishment of a headquarters in New York City in April 2022. This expansion was supported by a £20.5 million funding round aimed at globalizing their flagship product, GridMetrix, which has already raised over $80 million in total funding (source: solarpowerportal.co.uk). Additionally, the company received recognition as a BloombergNEF Pioneer in 2022 for its contributions to zero-emissions power, and in 2025, it won the Renewable Energy Project of the Year at the UK Green Business Awards for its work with NESO (source: reactive-technologies.com).
Working There
Reactive Technologies offers a dynamic work environment with a compact team of approximately 30 employees, primarily focused on research and development, sales, project delivery, and engineering roles. The company emphasizes a strong intellectual property culture, with over 75 patents granted, and seeks individuals with backgrounds in telecom and signal processing. The team is distributed across various locations, including the UK, USA, UAE, and Australia, indicating potential hiring opportunities in London, New York, and other expanding markets (source: zoominfo.com). While specific employee benefits are not publicly documented, the company culture is characterized by a commitment to innovation and collaboration, as highlighted by CEO Marc Borrett's recognition of the team's dedication during challenging pilot projects.
