Company overview
FlexGen Power Systems, LLC, a privately held limited-liability company (source: flexgen.com).
Durham, North Carolina, United States (source: flexgen.com).
What they do
FlexGen designs, integrates, commissions and supports utility-scale battery energy-storage systems, combining project delivery with the software and services used to deploy, control, optimise and maintain them; its core business is energy storage rather than solar or wind development (source: flexgen.com). Its principal software product, HybridOS®, is a hardware-agnostic energy-management system that integrates with battery manufacturers and combines controls, analytics, site-level supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and power-plant controls (PPC) (source: flexgen.com). Advanced analytics and AI-driven insights help storage owners pursue different electricity-market strategies and integrate multiple forms of generation (source: flexgen.com). Alongside software, FlexGen provides engineering, procurement, supply-chain support, project delivery, commissioning and lifecycle services, with application engineers, in-country supply-chain specialists and software integrators involved from project development through operations (source: flexgen.com). The company serves utilities, independent power producers, storage developers, government agencies, industrial businesses and project owners, supporting needs such as shifting electricity across time, grid capacity, reliability, peak-demand management and response to market prices across ERCOT, MISO, PJM, ISO New England and European markets (source: flexgen.com). Following its selected-asset acquisition from Powin, FlexGen said its software and services supported more than 25 GWh across over 200 energy-storage systems in 10 countries, with a platform designed for more than 80 battery and equipment configurations (sources: flexgen.com, flexgen.com).
Projects & track record
FlexGen reports completing more than 100 storage projects across 10 US markets, and says its integrated approach has brought sites online 90 days faster than the industry average (source: flexgen.com). Its work with Alliant Energy includes a 700-MWh storage portfolio in Wisconsin and Iowa, with FlexGen supporting design, construction, commissioning and long-term operations (source: flexgen.com). With SMT Energy, FlexGen has worked on more than a dozen ERCOT projects totalling over 300 MW; at SMT Houston IV in Houston, Texas, FlexGen, SMT Energy and Irby Construction completed commissioning and energisation of the 160-MW battery facility in six weeks, against an original schedule of approximately 25 weeks (sources: flexgen.com, flexgen.com). In partnership with Lightshift Energy, it supports a 16-project portfolio in Massachusetts, Virginia and Vermont: six completed projects delivered more than 25 MW and 85 MWh, while 10 under construction were planned to add over 55 MW and 200 MWh; Lightshift develops, owns and operates the projects, while FlexGen provides HybridOS and associated software and services (source: flexgen.com). The companies first partnered in 2024 on Lightshift’s Groton, Massachusetts, project, while Danville II is an 11-MW project for Danville Utilities intended to shave peak demand and help manage local load growth; FlexGen also says it supports more than 450 MW of operational battery storage in MISO—approximately half the region’s installed capacity at the time of its analysis—with a further 400 MW in development (sources: flexgen.com, flexgen.com).
Recent developments
In August 2025, FlexGen completed the acquisition of selected Powin assets and intellectual property, expanding its software and services footprint to more than 25 GWh across over 200 systems in 10 countries; the transaction concerned selected assets rather than Powin as an entire operating company (source: flexgen.com). In 2026, the company announced expanded European operations, saying it had been awarded projects in the United Kingdom, Finland and Sweden and was building a local team across the region (source: flexgen.com). Its European operation is based in London, with staff across the UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Poland and plans to expand into Germany (source: flexgen.com). FlexGen also announced a leadership realignment: Diane Giacomozzi became chief commercial officer, overseeing commercial, original-equipment-manufacturer and supply strategy, while Hugh Scott became chief operating officer, bringing technology, project delivery and lifecycle services together (source: flexgen.com). The six-week commissioning and energisation of the 160-MW SMT Houston IV facility was another recent operating milestone, compared with its approximately 25-week original schedule (source: flexgen.com).
Working there
FlexGen’s work spans energy-storage controls and software engineering, application and electrical engineering, systems integration, project management, procurement and supply chain, field commissioning, operations and maintenance, lifecycle services, customer success, commercial development and energy-market analytics (source: flexgen.com). Its integrated project model brings teams into contact with battery manufacturers, utility interconnection requirements, SCADA and PPC systems, construction and commissioning schedules, electricity-market operations and long-term asset performance (source: flexgen.com). This combines software development with the practical delivery and operation of physical energy infrastructure, rather than focusing solely on software or conventional engineering, procurement and construction work (source: flexgen.com). Teams are based in Durham and its European operation, and also support field work at customer sites across multiple US power markets; the European expansion includes locally based expertise for projects in the UK and continental Europe (sources: flexgen.com, flexgen.com).
