Job Description

The Senior Relay Technician is responsible for leading and executing the testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of protective relays, control systems, and associated equipment within electrical substations and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This role serves as a technical authority and on-site leader, ensuring compliance with SOLV Energy, client, and industry standards.

This role is remote with heavy travel to varying jobsites required. Specific location details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Position Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead daily safety briefings and identify, mitigate, and eliminate workplace hazards.
  • Apply Human Performance Error Prevention (HPEP) tools and principles.
  • Perform acceptance, commissioning, functional, and end-to-end testing of Transmission Line protection and Communication with utility.
  • Execute testing of transformers, breakers, and relay panel wiring.
  • Analyze relay event records and disturbance reports.
  • Review and analyze protection schemes and system designs.
  • Interpret protection and control schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Review outage, commissioning, and energization procedures.
  • Function as on-site technical lead and interface with customers.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Train and qualify Relay Technician I/II and entry-level engineers.
  • Utilize SEL Grid Configurator, IEC 61850, and SEL RTAC systems.
  • Be willing to perform switching activities
  • Prepare test reports, as-built drawings, and commissioning records.

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronic Technology, Engineering, or equivalent experience (preferred).
  • Minimum of five (5) years relevant industry experience.
  • NETA Level III or IV Certification (preferred).
  • Utility experience welcome but not a must.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and background check.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • A willingness to travel extensively and work extended hours on occasions.
  • Hands-on experience testing and maintaining protective relays.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for transmission and distribution systems.
  • Proficiency with various relay testing software and equipment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb ladders and access elevated work areas.
  • Ability to stand and work for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
  • Ability to work in outdoor and industrial environments.
