What They Do
Canadian Solar focuses exclusively on solar photovoltaic technology, battery energy storage, and related systems, without involvement in wind, hydrogen, or grid infrastructure beyond solar integration (source: wikipedia.org). The company manufactures high-efficiency PV modules utilizing advanced 210mm and 182mm N-type TOPCon solar cells, achieving bifaciality up to 85%. Their flagship products include the TOPBiHiKu7 series, which has cumulatively shipped nearly 170 GW globally as of late 2025 (source: csisolar.com). Additionally, through its subsidiary e-STORAGE, Canadian Solar provides utility-scale and residential battery storage solutions, having shipped over 16 GWh by September 30, 2025, with a substantial contracted backlog of $3.1 billion as of October 31, 2025 (source: prnewswire.com). Their target markets span residential, commercial & industrial (C&I), and utility-scale customers in over 160 countries, with a strong emphasis on the US, Canada, Europe, China, UK, South Africa, and Brazil (source: canadiansolar.com).
Projects & Track Record
Since entering project development in 2010, Canadian Solar has developed, built, and connected approximately 12 GWp of solar power projects and 6 GWh of battery energy storage projects worldwide, with a pipeline of 25 GWp solar and 81 GWh storage in various stages (source: prnewswire.com). Notable completed projects include the 32 MWp (23 MWac) Suffield solar facility in Southeast Alberta, Canada, which powers 7,400 households annually (source: wikipedia.org). In South Africa, Canadian Solar supplied 256 MW of modules for two utility-scale projects by SOLA Group, generating 580 GWh annually to power 40,000 households and significantly reducing CO2 emissions (source: wikipedia.org). Currently, the company operates 1.6 GWp solar projects with 6.5 GWp under construction or backlog and 20.9 GWp in pipeline, plus 1 GWh storage operating, 8.5 GWh backlog, and 54.3 GWh pipeline (source: prnewswire.com).
Recent Developments
In the last two years, Canadian Solar has made significant strides, including the opening of its new global headquarters in Kitchener, Ontario, on January 15, 2025, which consolidates various business units and reinforces its North American roots (source: prnewswire.com). On December 1, 2025, the company announced it would resume direct oversight of US manufacturing through CS PowerTech joint ventures, aiming to create thousands of US jobs and reshore supply chains (source: prnewswire.com). In June 2023, Canadian Solar planned a $250 million investment in a 5 GW factory in Mesquite, Texas, which is expected to employ up to 1,500 people and produce 20,000 panels daily (source: wikipedia.org). Additionally, the company has partnered with SOLARCYCLE for US-wide module recycling, enhancing its sustainability efforts (source: solarcycle.us).

Purpose
Acts as the regional senior technical specialist for power systems and product commissioning across the UK BESS fleet. Leads product commissioning of e-STORAGE products (SolBank, string inverters, MVSkids etc) to OEM standard, leads HV/MV maintenance and safety activities across e-STORAGE and third-party fleets (i.e. SMA, Power Electronics) and develops the competency of the wider service team to support HV/MV works.
Scope Definition: Product Commissioning
This role leads product commissioning of e-STORAGE products: commissioning of e-STORAGE power conversion and MV equipment to OEM standard, including first power-on initialization parameters, product-level testing, and return-to-service. The site Commissioning (Cx) team retains overall site and project commissioning ownership, including the energisation programme, grid compliance and G99 testing, punch lists, and client handover. The Power Systems Technician works within the site Cx team's sequence: the Cx team owns the programme and the date; Power Systems owns the product Cx, safety documents, and product-level sign-off within it.
MV/HV Authorisation & Control of Work
Control of work and HV authorisation are determined by contract and project phase:
- During commissioning, the EPC (or Principal Contractor) is responsible for site control of work and HV authorisation. This role operates within the EPC's safe system of work and provides product-level expertise.
- During LTSA operations, the HV authorisation and control-of-work model is defined in each contract and varies by site (client-appointed, third-party, or CSE-held). This role provides the trained, competent personnel for appointment where CSE holds or is delegated that responsibility.
- Where a third party holds HV authorisation for a site, this role coordinates, supervises interfaces, and delivers the product-level technical work within their control regime.
Key Responsibilities
Product Commissioning (e-STORAGE products)
- Lead product commissioning of e-STORAGE products across UK LTSA sites (SolBank, string inverters, MVSkids and associated MV plant) to OEM standard and project scope.
- Own and set first power-on initialization parameters (OEM-trained personnel requirement per product manuals); incorrect settings risk equipment damage and certification non-compliance.
- Own product commissioning standards, procedures, test records, and documentation packs; ensure consistency across all UK projects.
- Provide product-level technical support to the site Cx team during energisation.
- Support the site Cx team during SAT and witness testing; provide product-level technical sign-off.
HV/MV Operations & Safety
- Competent for appointment to carry out MV/HV isolations, earthing, and safety document duties under the prevailing site safe system of work, as a mandatory precursor to intrusive PM/CM works. Site HV authorisation arrangements are defined per contract and phase (see MV/HV Authorisation & Control of Work).
- Carry out operational HV/MV switching during the service phase, including switching for planned PM outages, CM interventions, and restoration on return to service, where CSE holds control of work under the contract.
- Provide HV/MV support to the service team during PM and CM activities: isolations, earthing, switching, and safe access where service team work interfaces with HV/MV plant.
- Lead HV/MV preventative maintenance across CSE, SMA and Power Electronics MV skids, RMUs, transformers, and protection systems per OEM schedules.
- Lead corrective maintenance and fault investigation on HV/MV equipment: root cause analysis, rectification and return to service.
- Provide safety leadership and oversight for all HV/MV activities in region, including supervision of third-party HV contractors where used.
Technical Expertise & Capability Building
- Subject-matter expert across all inverter platforms (CSE string inverters, SMA, Power Electronics) for HV/MV maintenance activities; product commissioning expertise applies to e-STORAGE products.
- Assess and develop service team competency for HV/MV support roles; deliver toolbox talks, training, and authorisation recommendations.
- Feed field learnings back into standards, RAMS/SOPs, and OEM escalations.
Requirements
- Trained and competent for MV/HV activities to 33kV; capable of appointment under company or client operational rules as contracts require.
- Time-served electrical background with utility-scale BESS or solar commissioning experience.
- Working knowledge of MV switchgear, transformers, and protection systems.
- Familiarity with G99 requirements sufficient to support the site Cx team during compliance testing.
- Full UK driving licence; regional and occasional national travel.
