About NRG

Company Overview

Name

NRG Energy, Inc.

Headquarters

Houston, TX, United States

Founded

1989

Size

Approximately 16,700 employees globally (source: forbes.com). Revenue of $6.858 billion in 2025 and $17.737 billion in the first half of 2026 (source: nrg.com).

What They Do

NRG Energy, Inc. is a publicly traded U.S. power company headquartered in Houston, Texas, that serves residential, commercial, and industrial customers with electricity, natural gas, home services, and demand-response/load-management solutions rather than focusing solely on renewable energy (source: nrg.com). In 2025–2026, NRG expanded significantly by acquiring LS Power, adding approximately 13 GW of natural-gas and dual-fuel generation assets across nine states, as well as CPower’s commercial and industrial virtual power plant platform (source: nrg.com). The company combines retail customer relationships with large-scale generation ownership and flexible demand-side assets, positioning itself uniquely in both supply and load-management economics, with a strong presence in Texas and PJM markets (source: nrg.com). Its retail offerings include home-energy products such as Home Essentials and residential virtual power plant programs, with a 2025 Texas residential VPP target raised to 150 MW (source: investors.nrg.com).

Projects & Track Record

NRG has been actively developing new gas-fired generation projects in Texas through the Texas Energy Fund (TEF) program. Notably, the T.H. Wharton project is a 415 MW facility with a 456 MW nameplate capacity, supported by a $216 million TEF loan at 3% interest, which achieved commercial operation on May 26, 2026 (source: nrg.com). Additionally, NRG has two other TEF projects, Greens Bayou and Cedar Bayou, totaling 1.1 GW in due diligence, backed by loans of $370 million and $562 million respectively, for 443 MW and 689 MW capacities (source: nrg.com). Collectively, these three TEF projects represent 1.5 GW of new generation capacity in Texas, all progressing on time and on budget (source: sec.gov). Earlier in 2025, NRG acquired a 738 MW natural-gas combined-cycle peaking portfolio in Texas from Rockland Capital for $560 million, further expanding its generation footprint (source: investors.nrg.com).

Recent Developments

In a major strategic move, NRG completed the acquisition of LS Power’s portfolio on January 30, 2026, a transaction valued at approximately $12.0 billion enterprise value, including $6.4 billion in cash, $2.8 billion in stock, and $3.2 billion of assumed debt (source: nrg.com). This acquisition effectively doubled NRG’s generation footprint by adding 13 GW of power generation assets and CPower’s virtual power plant platform (source: nrg.com). In 2025, NRG also signed 295 MW of long-term retail agreements to power data centers on two NRG-owned sites in Texas, with initial power deliveries expected in the second half of 2026 and full operation by 2030 (source: investors.nrg.com). The company updated its 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of $5.325 billion to $5.825 billion following the LS Power transaction close (source: investors.nrg.com).

Working There

NRG offers a wide range of roles across generation operations, retail energy sales, customer service, trading, engineering, project development, finance, legal, and demand-response/distributed-energy operations, reflecting its diverse business model (source: nrg.com). The company emphasizes market-competitive pay, short- and long-term incentives, and a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees and their families financially, emotionally, socially, and physically (source: nrg.com). Recent expansions, particularly in Texas, have driven hiring demand in generation development, plant operations, commercial origination, and grid/flexibility products, with a focus on Houston and Texas-linked roles (source: nrg.com).
