What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a Senior Project Engineer / Project Manager (m/f/d) who combines deep, hands-on technical troubleshooting expertise with the oversight and seniority of a project manager. This is a senior, customer-facing role with ownership of complex utility-scale projects involving battery energy storage systems (BESS), hybrid PV+BESS installations, and energy management systems (EMS).

You will lead project execution end-to-end - from sales handover through detailed engineering, system configuration, commissioning support, and project closeout. Critically, you must be able to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues yourself - across communication networks, SCADA systems, EMS platforms, and grid integration - while simultaneously managing project timelines, stakeholder expectations, and delivery quality.

You will coordinate across internal teams (engineering, product, sales, support) and external stakeholders (customers, EPCs, grid operators). When technical problems arise during integration, commissioning, or operation, you are the person who digs into logs, traces signal paths, isolates protocol-level issues, and drives resolution - not just escalates.

This role requires someone who can work independently, make sound technical and commercial decisions, and mentor junior engineers in a growing global delivery team. You will collaborate daily with engineering colleagues in Delhi and regularly with U.S.-based product and platform teams. The position is primarily office-based in Berlin; travel is not a regular requirement.

What You Will Do

  • Lead and own the delivery of complex utility-scale EMS, BESS, and hybrid PV+BESS projects across Europe - from technical handover to commissioning and closeout.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers, EPCs, and partners throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across communication networks, SCADA systems, EMS platforms, edge devices, and grid integration interfaces - including protocol-level diagnostics (Modbus, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3), signal path tracing, log analysis, and systematic root-cause identification.
  • Coordinate internal engineering, product, sales, and support teams to resolve open issues and ensure project milestones are met.
  • Design and review communication network architectures - including VLAN segmentation, redundant fiber optic ring topologies (IEC 62439/MRP), and OT network security zoning - alongside SCADA system configurations and power plant controller (PPC) specifications for grid-connected utility-scale renewable energy plants.
  • Define and enforce cybersecurity requirements for plant communication networks - including firewall rule sets, DMZ configurations, remote access policies (VPN/jump server), and security hardening of edge devices and EMS platforms - in line with IEC 62443 and applicable regulatory requirements (NIS2/KRITIS).
  • Develop and review project documentation including communication circuit diagrams, network topologies, interface specifications, and commissioning protocols.
  • Configure, validate, and debug Edge EMS, SCADA, and monitoring platforms (PowerTrack, Edge UI / HMI) for project-specific requirements - hands-on, not just at a management level.
  • Assess grid connection requirements and power plant control regulations across European and international markets - including VDE/ENTSO-E (Germany/Europe), Japanese grid codes (JEAC, JEC, TSO requirements), and other non-European regulatory frameworks - ensuring full compliance with applicable local and national grid codes.
  • Support commissioning activities remotely, including system integration testing, communication verification, fault diagnosis, and performance validation. On-site travel may occur in exceptional cases but is not a regular part of the role.
  • Perform detailed EMS configuration and PPC tuning - including power ramp rates, frequency response parameters, reactive power curves Q(U)/Q(P), and curtailment setpoints - coordinating with grid operators, optimizer partners, and customers to meet dispatch and grid compliance targets.
  • Drive process improvements for project delivery workflows, templates, troubleshooting runbooks, and engineering standards within the European team.
  • Mentor and guide junior project engineers in both project management practices and hands-on technical problem-solving.
  • Contribute to technical pre-sales support, including scope definition, effort estimation, and technical feasibility assessment for new opportunities.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Systems, Automation, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in renewable energy project delivery, with direct involvement in utility-scale PV, BESS, or hybrid projects.
  • Proven, hands-on troubleshooting expertise across SCADA, EMS, communication networks, telecontrol gateways, RTUs, and edge devices - you can isolate and fix problems, not just describe them.
  • Deep understanding of communication protocols (Modbus, IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3) and the ability to diagnose protocol-level issues in real project environments.
  • Solid understanding of industrial OT network design - VLAN architecture, managed switch configuration, fiber optic ring topologies, and firewall/DMZ concepts. Hands-on experience securing EMS or SCADA communication infrastructure is a strong plus.
  • Expert-level knowledge of power plant control (PPC), grid integration, and grid code compliance - with demonstrated experience across multiple European markets (VDE, ENTSO-E RfG) and at least one non-European jurisdiction (Japan, Middle East, or Asia-Pacific). Ability to independently assess grid code applicability for new markets.
  • Experience managing full project lifecycles including detailed engineering, system configuration, commissioning, and customer coordination.
  • Comfortable working in multi-stakeholder environments with customers, EPCs, grid operators, and internal cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent tools for communication and electrical design documentation.
  • Strong project management skills - able to manage timelines, priorities, risks, and resources across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proficient in German and English (written and spoken). Additional European languages are a plus.
  • Proactive, structured, and solution-oriented working style with strong communication and leadership skills.

What You Will Get

  • An international, growing company at the forefront of the global energy transition.
  • Flat hierarchies and short decision paths - you own your projects and have room for your ideas.
  • A team-oriented, appreciative culture with real growth opportunities in a scaling European operation.
  • Berlin office location with a modern, collaborative working environment.
  • Subsidized UrbanSports subscription and BVG public transit ticket.
  • Competitive salary, bonus plan,.
