SCADA Jobs in Renewable Energy

SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is the system that collects live measurements from turbines, inverters, substations, and batteries and lets operators send commands back to them, from a plant's control building or a remote operations centre. It is not the same as a reporting dashboard or an analytics platform: a SCADA system can start, stop, and curtail generation, and the grid operator depends on it. That makes it one of the few disciplines every asset needs, and the wind fleet alone is heading for 2.1 TW by 2030, according to GWO and GWEC.

What SCADA engineers do

Renewable SCADA work divides into project delivery and operations. On new projects, engineers design the plant network, configure remote terminal units, PLCs, and the power plant controller, map signals into protocols such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3, and Modbus, and build the operator screens. They then test every signal end to end with the grid operator as part of commissioning, since a missing or wrong value can hold up energisation.

In operations, SCADA engineers keep the data flowing: they troubleshoot communication failures, manage alarm lists, update firmware and configuration after equipment changes, and connect plant data to historians and monitoring software. Control room operators use the same system around the clock to dispatch plants, respond to grid instructions, and send wind operations and maintenance teams to faults, which is why wind technicians and control room operators appear alongside SCADA engineers in these listings.

The work sits between electrical engineering, control and automation, and IT networking. What makes the renewable version distinctive is scale and distance: a single operator may run hundreds of plants over leased lines, radio, or satellite, and each plant mixes equipment from different manufacturers with different data models.

Security is part of the job

The risks became concrete in February 2022. When the Viasat KA-SAT satellite network was hit by a cyberattack at the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, around 5,800 Enercon wind turbines in Germany, with 11 GW of capacity, lost remote monitoring and control. The turbines kept generating in automatic mode, but operators could no longer see or command them remotely. Since then, EU rules under NIS2 have extended cybersecurity obligations to more energy operators, and SCADA engineers are expected to design segmented networks, secure remote access, and patch control systems safely. People who combine both fields fill the growing number of operational technology cybersecurity roles.

Key employers

Asset owners and operators hire most. NextEra Energy, Ørsted, Clearway Energy Group, EDP Renewables, Invenergy, and Scottish Power run large remote operations centres and employ SCADA engineers, analysts, and operators to support them. Software and service companies such as Power Factors in Scottsdale, Arizona, integrate SCADA data from plants across many owners into their platforms, and engineering firms such as Ulteig and EPC contractors such as Terabase Energy hire for project delivery. Glasgow, Madrid, Seville, Gentofte near Copenhagen, and Athens lead the European listings.

Skills that pay

The strongest profile combines industrial protocols, networking at the level of VLANs and firewalls, and enough electrical knowledge to understand what a signal means for the plant and the grid. Experience with a specific power plant controller or with grid code compliance tests is valuable, and SCADA engineers who can script in Python to automate configuration and data checks progress fastest into senior and lead roles.
