What They Do

Good Energy is a pioneering British renewable energy company that focuses on decentralized energy solutions. The company supplies 100% renewable electricity to homes and businesses through long-term power purchase agreements with over 2,500 independent UK generators, ensuring that every customer unit is backed by equivalent renewable production (source: goodenergy.co.uk). Their services extend beyond energy retailing to include the administration of the UK's largest voluntary Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program, which supports over 180,000 microgenerators exporting power (source: goodenergy.co.uk). Additionally, Good Energy is involved in the installation of solar panels, home batteries, heat pumps, and EV charging infrastructure, catering to a growing market of residential and small business customers seeking sustainable energy solutions (source: goodenergy.co.uk). Their innovative platform, Piclo, launched in partnership with Open Utility, facilitates peer-to-peer renewable energy trading, further enhancing their commitment to decentralized energy (source: wikipedia.org). As the only B Corp certified home energy supplier in the UK, Good Energy stands out for its ethical sourcing and support for small-scale solar initiatives (source: bcorporation.net).

Projects & Track Record

Good Energy has a notable history of impactful projects in the renewable energy sector. One of their significant achievements includes the repowering of the Delabole wind farm in Cornwall in 2010, which was the UK's first commercial wind farm, originally established in 1991. This project was financed through an £11.8 million package, showcasing Good Energy's commitment to advancing renewable technologies (source: wikipedia.org). In 2014, the company invested £500,000 in Tidal Lagoon Power for the proposed Swansea Bay tidal scheme, although this project was later deemed unviable by the government in 2018 (source: wikipedia.org). Furthermore, Good Energy pioneered the UK's first homeowner solar export payment scheme in 2004, which significantly influenced the national FIT rollout in 2010, leading to the installation of 850,000 systems totaling 5 GW capacity by 2019 (source: goodenergy.co.uk). While the company has sold its wind and solar generation portfolio in 2022, it continues to source energy from over 2,000-2,500 distributed generators, maintaining a strong presence in the renewable energy landscape (source: wikipedia.org).

Recent Developments

In recent years, Good Energy has achieved significant milestones, including its B Corporation certification in July 2024, making it the only certified UK home energy supplier. This certification reflects the company's commitment to governance, ethics, and transparency, scoring 15.6 in these areas (source: bcorporation.net). The company celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2024, marking a quarter-century of contributions to the renewable energy sector, including administering over 180,000 FIT sites and expanding its installation services for solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps (source: goodenergy.co.uk). Additionally, on 27 January 2025, Good Energy announced an acquisition agreement with Dubai-based Esyasoft for £99.4 million, pending completion, which could further enhance its market position (source: wikipedia.org). The company has also been actively involved in discussions around policy shifts towards clean power by 2030, aligning its operations with national energy goals (source: wikipedia.org).

Good Energy offers a variety of roles focused on green careers, including positions in energy supply, customer service, installations (solar, batteries, heat pumps, EV charging), and FIT administration. Most hiring occurs at their headquarters in Chippenham, Wiltshire, with no other office locations specified for recruitment (source: wikipedia.org). Job Description

Good Energy is one of the UK's original renewable energy pioneers, built around the belief that people should be able to take practical action on climate change. Today, we're expanding beyond energy supply to help customers generate, store, share and use clean power.

Our ambition is to create the most trusted digital customer experience in UK clean energy, which works for both business and domestic customers, empowering them to generate, store, and trade energy seamlessly through one integrated ecosystem.

As Head of Design, you'll lead the creation of experiences that make complex energy journeys feel simple, intuitive, and genuinely human. This is a senior leadership role: you'll shape the design culture, capability, and customer experience of a company helping accelerate the transition to cleaner energy, while bringing a strong customer and experience perspective into strategic decisions across the business.

You'll lead a talented design team, working closely with product, engineering, commercial, service and operational leaders to create experiences that customers love across web, app, service, and operational touchpoints. You'll be expected to influence beyond Design, building alignment with senior stakeholders and helping the organisation make better decisions grounded in customer insight.

We're looking for someone who combines strong design craft, systems thinking, customer obsession, and modern leadership - someone who can elevate both the quality of our experiences and the way we work together.

What You'll Do

Define the experience vision

  • Shape the end-to-end customer experience across supply, install, and services.
  • Create a clear design vision that simplifies complex journeys, builds trust with customers, and gives senior leaders confidence in where we are heading.
  • Ensure experiences feel connected, intuitive, and consistently high quality across all touchpoints
  • Position design quality and customer experience as strategic differentiators for Good Energy

Lead and grow a high-performing team

  • Build, mentor, and inspire a multidisciplinary design team
  • Create a culture of curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and high standards
  • Support designers in developing their craft, confidence, and strategic impact
  • Embed design deeply into product development
  • Partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership from discovery through to delivery
  • Champion customer-centred design and evidence-based decision making
  • Ensure design is involved early in shaping problems, not just validating solutions

Create scalable systems

  • Drive consistency and efficiency through strong design systems and scalable patterns
  • Help shape experiences across interconnected platforms, APIs, and services
  • Balance customer needs, technical constraints, and commercial priorities

Champion insight, experimentation, and innovation

  • Use research, analytics, and experimentation to improve experiences continuously
  • Bring in best-in-class thinking from leading digital organisations
  • Explore how AI, automation, and emerging technologies can improve both customer and designer experiences

Influence across the organisation

  • Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across the business, including Product, Engineering, Commercial, Operations and SLT
  • Bring clarity and confidence to discussions around customer experience, design quality, prioritisation and trade-offs
  • Constructively challenge assumptions and help senior leaders make better decisions grounded in customer insight, evidence and experimentation
  • Help create a collaborative, forward-looking product, design, and engineering culture

What you'll need to succeed

Essentials

  • Proven experience leading design teams in a digital, customer-focused organisation
  • Strong track record of delivering high-quality consumer experiences across web and/or app
  • Experience building and evolving design capability, culture, and systems
  • Experience influencing senior leaders and shaping experience strategy beyond a single product or channel
  • Exposure to AI-enabled experiences, automation, or personalization

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Inspiring and empathetic leader with high standards and strong coaching skills
  • Highly collaborative, with experience partnering deeply with Product and Engineering leaders
  • Comfortable influencing at senior and executive levels, simplifying complexity and creating alignment around difficult decisions
  • Able to operate as a senior organisational leader, not only as the leader of Design

Design & Systems Thinking

  • Strong understanding of UX, interaction design, service design, and systems thinking
  • Experience simplifying complex customer journeys and operational processes

Familiarity with platform thinking, connected services, and scalable digital ecosystems

Strong judgement in balancing customer needs, technical constraints and commercial priorities

Desirable

  • Experience in energy, utilities, telco, fintech, or other regulated industries
  • Experience in organisations undergoing digital or product transformation
