About HanseWerk

Company Overview

Name

HanseWerk Natur GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of HanseWerk AG

Headquarters

Quickborn near Hamburg, Germany

Founded

1927

Size

Approximately 200 employees across seven locations in Northern Germany (source: hansewerk-natur.com)

What They Do

HanseWerk Natur GmbH specializes in the planning, construction, and operation of local and district heating networks as well as climate-friendly heating and energy generation systems, focusing on decentralized heat supply rather than large central plants (source: hansewerk-natur.com). The company operates over 870 facilities and around 150 heating networks with a total length exceeding 800 kilometers across Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Northern Lower Saxony (source: erneuerbare-energien-hamburg.de). Various technologies are employed, including combined heat and power (CHP), biomass plants, heat pumps, as well as systems powered by natural gas, biogas, landfill gas, sewage gas, wood pellets, and regional green residual materials (source: hansewerk-natur.com). Annually, these facilities generate more than 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, and the company also offers tailored energy concepts and operates energy plants for clients in housing, municipalities, and industry (source: innio.com).

Projects & Track Record

A standout project by HanseWerk Natur is the highly efficient combined heat and power plant commissioned in 2015 in Stapelfeld near Hamburg, which at the time was the largest and most powerful CHP plant in Northern Germany. It has an electrical capacity of nearly 10 MW and produces over 76 million kWh of electricity and up to 80 million kWh of heat annually, supplying around 21,500 households with electricity and 6,000 single-family homes with heat (source: ge.com). Other significant facilities include the high-efficiency CHP plant in Neuenfelde and a pilot project in Hamburg-Othmarschen where a Jenbacher gas engine was converted to hydrogen operation (source: hansewerk-natur.com). Current projects include operating a 600 kW air-source heat pump in Langenhorn since 2025, supplying 77 households as well as a school, sports hall, and daycare center, and a 500 kW heat pump on the roof of Schenefeld’s town center, which replaced gas heating in 2025 (source: wikipedia.org). In May 2024, Schleswig-Holstein’s first wood gas CHP plant was opened in Wahlstedt, supplying over 1,000 households, and in Kropp, the local heat supply was converted in 2024 to provide nearly fossil-free heating to around 200 customers (source: wikipedia.org). In Lütjenburg, a long-term contract began in 2023 to switch from natural gas to green district heating using wood pellets and later biomass pellets made from grass and green waste (source: wikipedia.org). Since 2022, HanseWerk Natur has been supplying the Stellinger Linse residential quarter in Hamburg, with around 1,500 apartments, primarily through a biomethane CHP plant and solar thermal systems (source: wikipedia.org).

Recent Developments

At the end of 2025, HanseWerk Natur announced a price reduction for district heating in Hamburg of up to five percent for 2026, positioning itself as the city’s second-largest district heating network operator with an annual heat sales volume of around 600 GWh and a network spanning over 350 kilometers within Hamburg alone (source: mynewsdesk.com). The company operates three large interconnected networks in the east, south, and west of Hamburg, as well as several smaller networks and heating plants (source: mynewsdesk.com). Additionally, Schleswig-Holstein’s first wood gas CHP plant was commissioned in Wahlstedt in 2024, and the heat supply in Kropp was converted to nearly fossil-free sources (source: wikipedia.org).

Working There

HanseWerk Natur offers a wide range of technical and engineering roles, including positions for electronics technicians and electricians in maintenance, repair, and commissioning of energy and electrical systems, as well as project developers for sustainable energy solutions in the heat transition sector (source: jobs.hansewerk.com). Work locations include Hamburg, Seevetal, Quickborn, Fockbek, and Oldenburg in Holstein, highlighting the company’s regional presence in Northern Germany (source: indeed.com). The corporate culture reflects a medium-sized technical utility company with long-term employment contracts, hybrid work models for certain roles, and a strong focus on expanding and maintaining heat infrastructure (source: jobs.hansewerk.com). The company emphasizes decentralized, climate-friendly energy supply and works closely with municipalities, housing companies, and industrial partners, without operating in the traditional end-customer energy sales market (source: hansewerk-natur.com).
