What They Do

BW Energy Storage Systems (BW ESS) specializes in battery energy storage systems (BESS), acting as a developer, owner, and operator of utility-scale projects that enhance energy market efficiency, integrate renewable energy sources, and stabilize electrical grids. The company focuses on large-scale BESS platforms that utilize advanced liquid-cooled technologies, such as Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0, which provide essential grid-forming capabilities including black start, millisecond inertia support, and frequency/voltage stabilization (source: bw-ess.com). These systems are designed for durations of up to 3.5 hours, enabling revenue generation through tolling agreements, frequency response, and energy arbitrage, particularly in deregulated energy markets across Europe and Australia (source: bw-group.com). BW ESS's strategic focus on long-term asset ownership rather than merchant sales allows it to serve grid operators, utilities, and energy traders effectively (source: bw-ess.com). The company leverages its backing from BW Group for funding and maritime expertise, which enhances its capacity for rapid project execution and innovative revenue models, positioning it as a leader in the energy storage sector (source: bw-group.com).

Projects & Track Record

As of early 2025, BW ESS boasts over 500MWh of operational BESS projects and more than 1GWh currently under construction, alongside a robust 7GW development pipeline (source: bw-group.com). A flagship project is the 100MW/331MWh Bramley BESS located near Bramley, Hampshire, UK, which became operational in early 2025, marking it as the largest battery energy storage system in the UK at that time and capable of powering approximately 44,000 homes daily (source: bw-group.com). Other significant projects include the Hams Hall site in the UK, which is currently under construction with a capacity of 1.4GWh, and the Berkswell site, which is at the ready-to-build stage (source: cbinsights.com). The company is also engaged in a 700MW/3.5-hour BESS portfolio in the UK, a 1.5GW collaboration with Zelos Energy in Germany, and multiple projects in Italy and Australia, significantly expanding its geographic footprint and operational capacity (source: bw-ess.com). Key clients include Shell Energy Europe, with whom they have a 7-year tolling agreement for the Bramley project, and partnerships with local developers to facilitate market entry (source: bw-group.com).

Recent Developments

In February 2025, BW ESS celebrated the inauguration of the 100MW/331MWh Bramley BESS, marking its first European project with Sungrow PowerTitan 2.0, under a groundbreaking 7-year tolling agreement with Shell Energy Europe established in 2024 (source: bw-group.com). In October 2024, the company made headlines by acquiring the remaining shares of Penso Power, thereby merging its team of nearly 30 specialists and adding a significant 2GW pipeline of projects in the UK and Australia, which contributed to a total pipeline of 5GW (source: ess-news.com). Additionally, BW ESS secured a 1.4GWh supply deal with Sungrow for the Hams Hall project and advanced joint projects in the UK and Italy (source: cbinsights.com). Recent announcements in 2025 included AIP Management acquiring a 49% stake in a 700MW/3.5-hour UK BESS portfolio and a collaboration with Zelos Energy Developments for a 1.5GW project in Germany (source: bw-ess.com). The Bramley project has been recognized as a significant milestone for enhancing UK grid resilience (source: bw-group.com).

Working There

BW ESS is actively hiring across various roles including project development, engineering, commercial operations, and business development, particularly following the integration of Penso Power in 2024, which enhanced their team with specialists focused on delivery and market entry (source: ess-news.com). The company is focusing its recruitment efforts on project sites in the UK, Australia, Italy, Germany, and Sweden, with a global team of nearly 30 supporting its multi-market expansion (source: bw-group.com). The culture at BW ESS is characterized by close-knit collaboration, as highlighted by CEO Erik Strømsø, who refers to the Penso teams as "trusted colleagues," fostering synergies in a fast-paced environment that navigates complex grid codes and local strategies (source: youtube.com). While specific benefits such as salaries or perks are not publicly documented, the long-term owner-operator model suggests a degree of stability tied to BW Group's extensive infrastructure expertise (source: bw-ess.com). Job seekers are encouraged to monitor LinkedIn for openings in Singapore and Europe as the company scales its operations to meet growing demand (source: linkedin.com).

Job Description

The Origination & Energy Markets Director will lead BW ESS Australia's BESS offtake origination, market-facing revenue strategy and commercial execution. The role combines deep market expertise with hands-on commercial leadership, owning the origination, structuring, negotiation and execution of revenue strategies and transactions across the Australian BESS portfolio. The Director will lead negotiations with retailers, traders, utilities and large energy users, validate revenue assumptions, assess commercial opportunities and translate market expertise into executable outcomes that drive long-term portfolio value.

As the senior commercial lead for Australian BESS revenue origination, the Director will work closely with legal, commercial, investment and technical teams. The Director will remain close to the detail and lead the commercial structuring and negotiation of PPAs, offtakes, tolling, optimisation and other energy revenue and risk management arrangements. This is a hands-on role requiring both deep technical expertise and a proven track record of applying that expertise to originate, negotiate and execute complex energy market transactions.

Core Responsibilities

Origination & Transaction Leadership

  • Own the origination strategy and commercial pathway for revenue and market-facing transactions across the Australian BESS portfolio.
  • Lead negotiations with retailers, traders, utilities, large energy users and other counterparties from initial engagement through term sheet, internal approval and execution.
  • Build and manage a counterparty pipeline for the Australian market, identifying new products, partnerships and routes to market.
  • Structure PPAs, offtakes, tolling, optimisation, hedging and other revenue or risk management arrangements to balance value, bankability and portfolio risk.
  • Work with internal and external legal teams to translate commercial positions into clear, executable agreements while maintaining ownership of the commercial outcome.

Investment & Commercial Decisions

  • Own market, revenue and contracting inputs into business cases, financing processes, investment approvals and Final Investment Decisions.
  • Lead market assessments, revenue scenarios and commercial risk analysis, drawing on internal capability and specialist advisors where required.
  • Present concise, evidence-based recommendations to executive leadership, investment committees, lenders and investors.
  • Work across Development, Investment, Finance, Project Delivery and Asset Management to ensure commercial decisions remain aligned throughout the asset lifecycle.

Market Strategy & Revenue Optimisation

  • Apply deep expertise in energy markets and BESS revenue optimisation strategies to develop, challenge and defend market views that inform project design, contracting, investment decisions and asset operations.
  • Work directly with the internal trading capabilities and optimisation providers to develop, test and refine dispatch, bidding and revenue strategies, challenging assumptions and identifying opportunities through detailed analysis.
  • Undertake and interrogate market, revenue and asset-level analysis to guide project design, contracting, investment assumptions and operating strategy.
  • Monitor NEM, regulatory and policy developments and convert them into clear commercial actions and portfolio recommendations.

Candidate Profile

  • 10+ years' experience in structured energy origination, bilateral energy transactions or route-to-market arrangements with direct exposure to BESS, flexible generation, renewables or energy-intensive customers.
  • Demonstrated track record of independently originating and closing bilateral energy transactions with retailers, utilities, traders, corporates or large energy users.
  • Ability to build senior counterparty relationships and convert opportunities from early dialogue into executable commercial terms.
  • Deep technical understanding of BESS revenue streams, market participation, trading strategies, dispatch, risk and contract structures, with the ability to challenge assumptions, identify value opportunities and translate analysis into commercial decisions.
  • Strong knowledge of the National Electricity Market. Direct BESS experience is highly valued; adjacent power experience will also be considered.
  • Clear and credible communicator who can influence senior internal stakeholders and external counterparties while remaining accountable for detailed technical and commercial delivery.

How We Work

BW ESS culture and way of working is based on few clear foundations:

  • talent density over team size,
  • flexible people over fixed structures,
  • context over control,
  • results over processes,
  • transparent and clear feedback.

We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds and experiences, and we are committed to an inclusive hiring process that supports equal opportunity.
