What They Do

Voltus focuses on developing distributed energy resource (DER) software platforms that aggregate and optimize flexible loads, behind-the-meter batteries, distributed generation, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles. This technology enables demand response and grid services without the need for owning hardware (source: voltus.co). Their flagship platform employs AI-powered optimization techniques, including historical load analysis and real-time forecasting, to connect these resources to electricity markets, facilitating automated meter-to-market dispatch across all nine North American wholesale markets (source: voltus.co). Products and services offered by Voltus include demand response programs that can pay users substantial amounts for load reduction, grid services for peak demand charge avoidance, and innovative solutions like the "Bring Your Own Capacity" program for data centers (source: voltus.co). Their target markets encompass commercial and industrial energy users across various sectors, including notable clients such as Home Depot, Coca-Cola, and Walmart (source: canarymedia.com). Voltus distinguishes itself from competitors through its superior software capabilities and a zero-cost/risk model that shares earnings only after customers are compensated (source: voltus.co).

Projects & Track Record

Voltus has successfully completed numerous projects, including a significant partnership in 2018 with a battery-as-a-service provider that enrolled 14 sites across IESO and NYISO, generating $1.52 million in revenue through automated dispatching (source: voltus.co). The company has also worked with steel manufacturers and cement plants to monetize their load flexibility through demand response programs (source: voltus.co). In 2025, Voltus delivered an impressive $240 million to customers through daily dispatches, managing 8.1 GW for 816,000 MWh of grid relief, and recognized top performers with Customer Peak Performance Awards (source: voltus.co). Their ongoing efforts include dispatching their full 8.1 GW virtual power plant portfolio across all nine markets, marking their first entry into MISO and SPP (source: voltus.co). Key clients include major corporations like Home Depot, Coca-Cola, and Walmart, showcasing their broad market reach and effectiveness in delivering energy solutions (source: voltus.co).

Recent Developments

In January 2023, Voltus launched its first Carbon Response Program, successfully reducing 8,920 metric tons of CO2 while generating revenue for participants (source: voltus.co). Additionally, Dana Guernsey succeeded co-founder Gregg Dixon as CEO, with Dixon remaining on the board; under Guernsey's leadership, the company emphasized its 5.8 GW integration and the introduction of new carbon products (source: voltus.co). In 2025, Voltus announced record customer payouts of $240 million, alongside managing 8.1 GW and providing 816,000 MWh of relief, further solidifying its position in the market (source: voltus.co). The company has also launched the Bring Your Own Capacity program for data centers and partnered with Vurge for utility bill optimization, reinforcing its leadership in virtual power plants (source: sunyaenergy.com). No major acquisitions or funding rounds have been reported post-2023, although the 2022 SPAC plan valued the company at $1.3 billion (source: canarymedia.com).

Working There

Voltus offers a variety of roles across engineering, product management, sales, market operations, regulatory affairs, and customer success, drawing talent from notable organizations such as EnerNOC and FERC (source: voltus.co). As a fully remote company, Voltus hires across the U.S. and Canada, allowing flexibility without the need for specific office locations, although San Francisco and Boston serve as operational hubs (source: climatebase.org). The company culture is highlighted by its recognition as one of America's Best Startup Employers, emphasizing employee satisfaction and growth, with a mission-driven focus on climate impact (source: voltus.co). Employees benefit from cash-generating opportunities, real-time data access, and a high-performance environment that supports daily grid operations (source: voltus.co).
